Asus P535 Against Apple iPhone Comparison

The P535 is an upcoming touchscreen mobile device from Asus, powered by Windows Mobile 5.0. It’s already been released in parts of Asia, but it’s taking its time to arrive in Europe and no release date has been announced for North America as of yet. It looks very sleek (see photos below), but how does it compare with the Apple iPhone? Let’s have a look at it.
Asus P535’s dimensions are 59 x 109 x 19 millimetres, as compared to iPhone’s 61 x 115 x 11.6mm. According to some basic calculations that means that Apple iPhone is around 1/3 smaller in size. Surprisingly, the weight is almost the same, with the iPhone weighing 135 grams, and Asus P535 145 grams. Furthermore, Asus’ screen is somewhat smaller (not that it’s a good thing), due to inclusion of a directional pad under the touchscreen (whether that’s a good thing or a bad thing is debatable).
Both of the phones operate on GSM frequencies, support 802.11b/g, USB, Bluetooth 2.0, and have almost similar camera resolutions (1.92 megapixels on the P535 versus 2 megapixels on the iPhone). But that’s where the similarities end.
The downside of the P535 is its low storage capacity: only 256MB versus 4GB on the basic model of the iPhone. However the P535 does have a miniSD expansion slot that could somewhat increase the amount of data it can hold. The screen’s resolution is also lower, a measly 240 x 320 versus iPhone’s 320 by 480.
But it’s not quite hopeless, as Asus did manage to include a few unique features that the iPhone doesn’t have. One of them is the in-built GPS unit, while another one is out-of-the-box support for Microsoft Office documents, and yet a third one is the ability to easily encrypt sensitive data. Another curious stated feature is a business card recognizer, although its usefulness is quite doubtful.
Overall, the Asus P535 looks like a rather promising and elegant device, powered by a powerful enough Xscale CPU. If it wasn’t for the Apple iPhone, it could’ve been a major hit, but now it will most likely end up as a tool in some businessman’s pocket. Nonetheless, keep an eye on it when it’s coming out, if the price is right.
