How to unlock (firstgen) iPhone 2G firmware v2.2
If you’re an owner of the original Apple iPhone 2G — first generation iPhone model, production and sales of which stopped in mid-2008 — and you would like to unlock your device to use “unauthorized” SIM cards, this tutorial is for you.
(…but if you own a new iPhone 3G, see this guide instead)
This tutorial is for unlocking the iPhone 2G using a PC or Mac computer.
Meant for: iPhone firmware v2.0 to v2.2 inclusively.
Important note: the newly released iPhone firmware v2.2.1 is NOT supported as of yet! So make sure you have firmware v2.0 through v2.2 installed. Hint: if you don’t know what firmware your iPhone has, you can check it via iTunes or by going to “Settings > About > Version” on your iPhone.
(…and here you can download these firmware versions: iPhone 2G firmware downloads)
(…do you need an older bootloader? You can download iPhone bootloaders here).
So now that you’ve made sure that you have firmware v2.0, v2.1, or v2.2 firmware installed, you’re ready to unlock your iPhone 2G.
Warning: before doing anything, make sure you back up your iPhone’s data via iTunes — so you wouldn’t lose any data just in case something goes wrong.
iPhone 2G unlock steps:
- To start with the process, download the free QuickPwn iPhone hacking program. It is available for both Mac and Windows powered computers.
- After the file is downloaded, install the program by clicking on the downloaded file.
- Connect your iPhone to your computer.
- Run QuickPwn.
- Select iPhone 2G as the requested device to unlock.
- Follow the GUI interface instructions.
Note: you might want to install Cydia/Installer while you’re in QuickPwn — these programs allow you to download unauthorized third party iPhone apps onto your iPhone.
If everything went fine, then your iPhone should be able to accept SIM cards from any mobile service provider.
…but in case something is wrong, just restore to the backup you’ve just made.
