How to unlock iPhone 3G firmware v2.2
So hey, you’ve got an iPhone 3G — but how can you unlock it for use with other than originally intended service providers / SIM cards?!
In order to unlock the iPhone 3G, you need to have iPhone firmware v2.2. If you don’t have it, you can download it here, afterwards use iTunes to install it via “update firmware” button. Hint: if you don’t know what firmware your iPhone has, you can check it via iTunes or by going to “Settings > About > Version” on your iPhone.
NOTE: iPhone firmware v2.2.1 will NOT work with this unlock hack! So make sure you have v2.2 installed in order to proceed with this guide. Otherwise you’ll need to create a custom firmware (if you decide to do that, use Pwnage Tool and these iPhone bootloader files here, but this method is not covered in the guide below).
#1 Step: download and run QuickPwn to “jailbreak” your iPhone (IMPORTANT: make sure that you install Cydia during QuickPwn jailbreak process to go to the next step, otherwise you’ll need to download and install it manually which is much more tedious).
#2 Step: Using Cydia, download the Yellowsn0w iPhone 3G unlock app. To be able to see this app in Cydia, add : http://apt9.yellowsn0w.com to your sources, and refresh/restart Cydia, afterwards just tap on it to download and install it.
#3 Step: Run the Yellowsn0w app and make sure to follow the instructions mentioned here.
If all of the above went right, your iPhone 3G should now be able to get signal using “unauthorized” carriers’ SIM cards! …but it also might not, since Yellowsn0w is still in beta, so you might want to backup your iPhone’s data before running Yellowsn0w.
