iPhone firmware upgrade / downgrade (Windows)

Since you’ve got a brand new Out of The Box iPhone, it’s most likely to have the latest firmware version. However, chances are that you don’t have the latest version. Or maybe you have the latest version but want an earlier one instead, for some reason…

The best time to upgrade or downgrade your OOTB iPhone is of course before you actually get to hacking it.

As such, your #1 task is to find out what firmware you have at the moment. If it’s the latest one and that’s the one you want to keep, skip the rest of the guide. If your firmware needs an upgrade (or if you want to downgrade it for some reason), read on.

Your second task is to download and install iTunes (make sure you select the Windows version).

Now in order to upgrade or downgrade your firmware you will need to press and hold your iPhone’s power (top) and home (next to the speaker, bottom) buttons together, hold them for around 15 seconds until your iPhone seems to have turned off, then release the power button while still pressing the home button. About 15 seconds later your iPhone will enter the recovery mode, at which stage you’ll need to connect it to your computer.

As soon as your iPhone was detected your iTunes will be launched, prompting you to restore your iPhone. You can either click on “restore” to restore to the latest available firmware version, or hold down the SHIFT button and press on restore. The latter will allow you to manually select the firmware version you’d like to restore to…. you can download them below:

- iPhone 1.0.0 firmware
- iPhone 1.0.1 firmware
- iPhone 1.0.2 firmware
- iPhone 1.1.1 firmware
- iPhone 1.1.2 firmware
- iPhone 1.1.3 firmware
- iPhone 1.1.4 firmware

After the restore procedure is complete (mind you, this will take some time, so make sure your iPhone is well charged) you should have the firmware that you wanted.

Now you can proceed to actual hacking.
