Why or why not hack your iPhone

To start off our iPhone hacking guide, we will simply answer why hack — and not hack your iPhone.

Why to hack:

#1: So you could use hundreds of free third party programs for the iPhone created by the underground community. By factory default all new handsets don’t allow installing unauthorized third party programs — before it can happen your iPhone has to undergo a process called “jailbreak“.
#2: So you could use any SIM card with the device. By default new iPhones are locked to one provider. After undergoing the “unlock” procedure your iPhone will be able to accept any SIM card. That can be handy for folks that don’t live in the USA, UK, France, or Germany.

Why not to hack:

#1: Hacking will most certainly void your original warranty — there were cases when Apple refused to service hacked devices. And if something goes wrong during the unlock procedure you might end up with a dead iPhone.
#2: Jailbreaked iPhones are more prone to security problems. While at the time of writing there were no “real” iPhone virii, the potential is there, as was proven by an iPhone trojan.

Now that you know the risks it’s up to you to decide whether you want to proceed.

Note: we do not take any responsibility for anything going wrong during the unlock procedure, but we do post only proven methods.

Part #2 of the hacking guide: What do you need to jailbreak and unlock the iPhone?

So call me retarded, but I’m still trying to figure out this cracking bit. So once you crack it, and can use another SIM card, what do you do? Just go into BELL and say “Hi I’d like a phone plan for my cracked iphone?” Like I definitely see wanting to use all the third party programs, but what benefit is there to being able to use a different companies SIM card? Like is there some way that you wont have to pay for a data plan with another company or something? While I’m thinking about it, what about using things like Skype? Does cracking it allow you to do this? Please excuse my ignorance, I’m cell phone shopping and cant decide between an iphone or Blackberry. Any information you could give would be very, VERY appreciated, and don’t be shy to tell me more than you think I need to know. Thanks again.

    Hey Charles,

You won’t be able to use it with BELL, since Bell uses CDMA technology (= they do not support SIM cards, like the i{Phone does). But you’ll be able to use it with any carrier that has SIM cards support (e.g.: Fido, Rogers in Canada) … (Telus/Bell won’t work since they don’t have SIM card enables phones)

Bell has SIM cards since they're moving to HSPA/GSM , BB storm and world editions come with SIM cards.
