Radio Flare is a unique ‘musical shooter’ game. I haven’t really played too many shooter games for the iPhone but that really didn’t matter with this one. Control accuracy is of utmost importance when you’re being shot at, and Radio Flare does a very good job of this.

The premise of this game, as with most shooters, is to erase the competition. In this game, the competition is a never-ending onslaught of space intruders. Some of these are harmless, but some shoot back, so watch out! Taking out the enemy is also quite original. To ‘shoot’ the incoming space ships, you drag your finger over them, and they all are all linked together and blow up at the same time. They give off little red ‘flares’, which need to be collected to beat the level. Your ship can move anywhere on the screen with your finger on it, making incoming hazards easy to avoid. I found it is best played with both thumbs (left one to steer, right to shoot).

Being a musical shooter, you would expect the sound to be above average. It is. The soundtrack is an interactive version of an electronic song. Collecting flares intensifies the music. I really enjoyed the sound the game had to offer. [Editor's note: in fact, Radio Flare was nominated for best audio achievement award at this year's Independent Games Festival Mobile.]

Moving on to graphics, this game is very pleasant to look at. All the pictures, from the menus to in the game are very crisp. The developers said they added ‘intense’ colors to the game and they sure did, everything just pops. Two game modes are permitted: Arcade and Flow. Arcade for if you have time to burn and Flow if you just want to do a little light playing.

This game doesn’t get old fast, there’s lots of good playing available. From the colors, to the music, to the actual gameplay, there’s something there for everyone.
