When it comes to iPod speaker docks, there are a few things I look for which can make or break the dock. First and foremost, it needs to sound good and be loud enough so that you don’t need to have it a couple feet from you to enjoy it. Size is also another important thing. If a dock is overly large, it better sound good! Lastly, any extra features a dock has are nice, whether they are standard or something not so standard. The Philips DC910 has a couple of things going for it but falls a little short in the most important category, sound quality.
The DC910 works with all iPods with a 30-pin connector, and it passed with my iPhone 3G other than that annoying ‘This accessory isn’t made for iPhone’ warning. It has a few different attachments for different iPod models. No iPhone one however, but you can still dock without the attachment, it’s just not as solid. This dock also has a rotating function which is nice for landscape video viewing.

The biggest problem for me with this dock is that the audio quality is sub-par. It is passable at low volumes but when you turn it up, it doesn’t handle it too well, getting fuzzy. The bass is not all that strong either. The dock itself is also relatively large. Not a huge deal if it always stays in one spot, but not great if you want to take it with you anywhere. You would think with the size of it, the speakers would sound a little better. I’ve definitely used smaller docks that sounded much better.
The thing that the DC910 does have going for it is that it has a lot of different features to choose from. There is a built in radio and you can program in 40, that’s right, 40 stations. I don’t know who has 40 different stations they listen to, but nice to know you have the option. On the top there is a USB port as well as a slot for an SD card. If you’re without an iPod, there are two AUX in ports on the back as well. This makes the dock fairly versatile in terms of being able to pull music off almost any device.
There is a small backlit digital screen on the dock itself as well as buttons to control music, volume, source input, presets, and power. A remote with all these same functions is included. Overall, the DC910 isn’t a bad looking product and not too expensive. However, if you like good clean audio, I can’t give my full recommendation.
Score: 7/10
