Before I started reviewing iPhone accessories, I bought a pair of Shure SE210 earphones when my much-loved XtremeMac FS1s were showing wear and tear from using them ALL the time. I got curious and switched brands, which by the way, was easy as the FS1s were no longer on the market.
Although this is not a review of those earphones, I will say that I enjoyed them a lot (and still do). But it’s only been recently that many earphone models have begun to include a built in mic for iPhone use. Which leaves many early buyers of earphones with a dilemma, buy a new pair with mic or do without.
Shure saw this as an opportunity and offers the MPA (Music Phone Adapter) which works with all Shure model earphones as well as other brands (although Shure won’t say which ones).
The concept is a one-trick-pony… plug your earphones into the MPA and plug that into your iPhone and voila!, you can answer your phone with a click of a button and return to your music when you hang up. Simple, huh? And it works without degrading the sound quality of your favorite tunes. You even have the option of removing the mic when you don’t want to be bothered.
Shure uses some of the technology they are so good at in their micropones. The sound is clear and no one will have trouble hearing you talk. But keep in mind that while this solution is less expensive than high-end earphones, they are not cheap. $49.99 US is the exact same price as the excellent sounding NuForce NE-7m headset that ALREADY comes with a microphone. (These will be reviewed soon)
So if you have a pair of cheap-o earphones, I would recommend the NuForce NE-7m headset over the Shure MPA. But if you already own a pair if high end earphones and need the convenience of a mic, then the Shure MPA is a good choice.
