NAVIGON Mobile Navigator Europe is a sat nav application for the iPhone. Finally the iPhone has everything you could possibly need while out and about.

When you first open Navigon, you are warned not to use this application while driving. Strange disclaimer considering the nature of the app, but nevermind. The first option you have is, obviously, to enter an address starting with a postcode or a city. Postcode support is only valid for up to four digits (full postcodes in the UK are six or seven digits), after which you can narrow the search down to a street, and then finally a street number or cross street. Pressing start navigation, opens a 3D rendering of the surrounding area, with an orange band showing the direction you need to be travelling. A quick sidenote: GPS seems to take a minute or so to connect, even if the app has been open for a while, but once the navigation is started the connection to GPS is great. The voice instructions are clear and easy to understand, and for each turn, you are given a pre-turn instruction as well as one as you arrive at the turn.

Another option is searching for a point of interest (POI) near you. You can search in a specific city, nationwide, or nearby. Using the nearby option, you can search using a variety of categories including hotels, theatres, libraries as well as others. The database of POI’s is good but there were a noticeable amount of omissions whilst searching through some of the categories. There are also buttons for petrol stations, parking and restaurants at the bottom of the ’search for POI’ screen. Clicking a POI brings up the address and then you can start the navigation.

Another nice feature of Navigon is the ‘Take me home’ button. Once you have initially set-up your address, pressing the button will bring directions up so you can get home from wherever you happen to be. Pressing contacts at the bottom of the main screen allows you to scroll through your contacts to select one of their addresses to get directions to. You can also save locations as favourites for quick access when you need them, accessible from the bottom favourites icon.

It’s a great experience, is as easy to use as any standard sat nav and having navigation integrated into my iPhone makes me love my phone even more.
