iPhone/iPod Accessory Review: NuForce NE-7M Headset

One thing I’ve noticed while reviewing various earphones and headsets is that there are a lot of good to really good models out there in the $50-$75 range. $50 seems to be the sweet spot in the low end, meaning anything priced lower will probably not be all that good.
But once you reach the magical number of 50, things improve dramatically.
Take the NuForce NE-7M headset. These are from a company that makes incredibly expensive audio equipment. And true to form, this headset is anything but cheap. But get this… the NE-7Ms are one of the most inexpensive headsets out there… period. $49. That’s less than $50.
On close inspection, they are very well made and quite comfortable. And they look like they cost more than what they do, a lot more. A band of copper-colored metal adds a bit of class to the design. Also, they are on the small side, so you won’t look silly while wearing them.
Of course, the real proof in these beauties is how they sound. They sound like they cost… well, a lot more than they do. The sound is warm, neutral and well balanced. The highs can sometimes be a little too bright, but that’s rare. The bass is not overpowering, but the NE-7ms provide a solid bottom. Mids are the most neutral and the most pleasant part. The overall sound is sort of a ‘mama bear’ approach. Thats a good thing. It means you can listen for longer periods with little fatigue.
Oh, and these earphones are a true headset, they have a mic. So, as with many newer earphones, you can make and receive calls on your iPhone. And still less than $50.
I would rate comfort as average with the supplied eartips. A pair of after-market foam eartips would help here. I did get good isolation, though, one of the reasons for the decent bass.
Included with the headset are three sizes of eartips and a vinyl snap-shut carrying case.
Not a lot of extras, but they only cost… well, you get it.
The more I listen to these, the more I appreciate what NuForce has accomplished. Really, I’ve heard more expensive earphones sound much less impressive. And I’m thinking, if this company can do this for less than $50, why can’t all the others?

8/10
