When i first saw the WildCharger Pad and WildCharge case, I just knew I had to try it out. What could be simpler, set your iPhone down on the WildCharger Pad and walk away knowing that your iPhone is charging. No messing with the USB plug and wires. Just plug in the WildCharger Pad into an outlet. Then when you need to charge the phones (usually overnight for me) just set the phone down and that’s it.

Its a very simple and ingenious concept. But there are a couple of chinks in the armor.

If you need to recharge your iPhone in a place where things get plugged and unplugged all the time, this won’t be all that convenient to use. So make sure you can dedicate an electrical outlet to the unit and then just leave it there.

More importantly, I have issues with the required case. It’s a high-quality silicone case that protects very well. Unfortunately, by design, the mini port at the bottom of the iPhone is used by the case. Otherwise, the charging would not work. Consequently, the port is no longer available for anything else. And I need my USB port frequently. So this case is not an ideal case for day to day use. You can remove and re-attach the case to the iPhone when you need to recharge, but it fits so well that its a pain to do everyday. And frankly, if you have to go through all that, its easier to just plug in your USB cord like you usually do. If WildCharge could make a case that is half-height and completely open at the top  for easy inserting and removing of the iPhone, that I think this product would have a much broader appeal.  That way, the USB port on the phone is available when you’re not charging the iPhone and the case can stay with the charging pad.

Having said all that, if you don’t need your USB port all that much and can leave the charging unit in one place, than this product will make your life a little easier, especially if you are always losing your cords. The WildCharge Skin and WildCharger Pad simplifies things. And sometimes, that’s all a product needs to do to be the perfect solution.

I have heard the rumor that three new WildCharge cases are coming out for the iPhone at CES – a soft case that exposes a micro-USB port, a hard case that also exposes a Micro USB port AND a hard case that exposes a micro-USB port but also has an add-on battery using some new “green” technology.
