Vers Cases for iPod
Price: $39.99

Vers is a maker of high-end iPhone/iPod speaker docks made out of hardwood and bamboo. These speakers are as beautiful as they are functional. For whatever reason - maybe they had wood left over - they decided to make matching cases. And so we are the beneficiaries of that decision.
I’ve tested a lot of iPhone cases ranging from silly to ones that fall into the “I can use this everyday” case. The wooden Vers Shellcase I received is neither silly nor used as a daily case. But that’s unimportant. This is a case to be seen and be seen using. It is one of the most beautiful cases I’ve ever held. It just begs to be touched. The Shellcase is carved out of a single block of hardwood (or bamboo). No seams. No awkward fit. The only adhesive used is for the scratch-resistant lining.
The style is minimalist to the extreme. There is a horizontal slot cut out of the front of the case which is necessary for the internal GPS to work and the usual docking slot. Other than that, nothing.
Depending on how much protection you want, you have three choices. I have the case that allows you to see and use the iPhone while it remains in the case. The other two cases (the Slipcase and Infocase) require that you remove the iPhone first to use it. In my mind, that just increases the chance of dropping an expensive Apple toy. However, even with the case I have, you still have to slide the iPhone out just to change volume or use the mute button. In my mind, its that kind of minimalism that keeps this case from being practical for everyday use.
Having said that, this is one sexy case. A lot of thought went into how it feels as well as looks. I found myself not being so quick to pocket my iPhone while using this case. I tended to hold it more. Vers certainly succeeded there.
Sliding the iPhone in and out is a cinch. The same scratch-resistant lining also allows easy movement in or out. No snags or drags. Even so, the Shellcase’s fit is snug enough to hold the iPhone even if the case is held upside down. However, I do not recommend flinging your case around carelessly while holding as the iPhone could come flying out and … well, just don’t.
Also included is a nifty poplin drawstring bag to help preserve the case when not being used, or even when it is being used. Your decision.
If you are one of those concerned about the environment - and who isn’t - you will be happy to know that Vers plants 100 trees for every tree they use in manufacturing their products. How many companies can say that?
