Bill Gates Won’t Buy an Apple iPhone

Posted by dennis on February 3rd, 2007 at 10:58pm Comments

Bill Gates was answering some interview questions for the February 2nd 2007 edition of Business Week magazine. One of the questions, of course, focused on the Apple iPhone.

BW:
Would you buy an Apple iPhone at $499 or $599?

BG:
Well, of course, I’m the wrong person to ask. I like to dial numbers with one hand, and maybe I’m the only one. The phone space is where we think software will be the critical element. If there’s anything good about the iPhone, it’s software. How many companies in the world can do great software? Will Nokia step up to a world where software is super-important? It’s not clear. Will Sony? Well, they’re trying, but so far it’s been tough for them.

So the key trend to look at is the importance of software and then say who really has shown the ability to do strong software? In some ways, just we have. If you define it more broadly, yes, Apple has done a few things well. Google has done a few things well. But the leaps in software and the kind of long-term investments we’re making make it clearer than ever that we picked the right business, and the right place to contribute.

In other news Bill Gates obviously didn’t notice that Microsoft’s strong software needs a critical vulnerability patch every single week.

Umm... Yeah. A *few* things. Like, everything that no-talent putz has been copying for the last twenty years.

Mark your calendars, people. BG realizes that the failure of Longhorn was the start of Microsoft's decline. He's all out of ideas, so all he can do now is focus on his competition, not on his customers, the way that Apple and Google do.

Is he talking about WinCE and Windows Mobile? Strong software? Is that a joke, or is he really smoking the string stuff now?
  • Chris
haha he owns 30 percent of apple anyways. so he gets 30% of apples profits he is biased any which way he comments I guess
  • MSNBC
Gates has been smoking the crack since Vista was released.
  • ekin
You failed to highlight the most important quote "Well, of course, I’m the wrong person to ask." You attention seeking mac users are so quick to criticise everything that comes out of this mans mouth. You act as if you deserve a metal for being mac users. Bill gates pwns your face your family and your life.
New flash he is going to obviously support HIS software ... live with it and live wit the fact apple will always be 2nd to MS
  • anon
If Mr. Gates were to buy an iPhone, then top Microsoft execs would start getting them. This would create a morale hit for the rest of the employees at Microsoft (deflating the hype over WinCE), and possibly affect the share price. Yes the iPhone is a great product, but would you risk taking a hit to your $70 billion by being seen with your competitor's phone? He'll probably get the Prada one instead.
  • Dean
Ok wow, he stole the platform of the mac over 20 years ago. It's not like hes continuing to use the code today. And yes, security patches will be released nearly every week when over 85% of people who use computers use PC's, so when you take into account HOW many people use it, then yes, you will have to work hard at releasing security updates. Macs would have the same issue if the tables were turned. You can't use your minority as a strength.
  • Erick
Windows ME? ANY verion of IE? Whatever. When you're rich, nobody bothers to confront you when you're saying stupid things.
  • Bill Gates will release an iphone killer dubbed iRotary after they're done reverse engineer the iPhone. Typical MS strategy...
  • Cam
Gates is obviously mad that Apple has created something that will be really hard to copy.
  • Mike
iPhone was even not lauched and already win the battle. Trust me, it will be an earthquake when iPhone gets to the market.

Companies like Nokia, Motorola and Sony will sh*t their pants off while iPhone starts skyrocketing.

I never saw a not launched product cause so much tsunami in the market. People will die, companies will crumble.

I will buy my popcorn and seat on the frontrow to watch all the fun that is coming on the next months.

Gates and his "look mom look at my half helmet hair" is pathetic. He is a loser in all aspects.
  • ToastBusters
It is rather difficult to take this article seriously. I'm suspecting that it's satire based on the following quote:

"who really has shown the ability to do strong software? In some ways, just we have."

Nobody, not even gates, is stupid enough to thing that Microsoft produces "strong software" much less is the only one. They are really good at marketing, though. Anyone who can make an inferior product dominant to the point of running a monopoly is a genius when it comes to marketing- but produce strong software? no.
  • Yeah, well I still say that Bill Gates needs to stop talking and just leave Microsoft respectfully. And he needs to click my name!
  • BG was always going to give a response just like that. Ask Steve Jobs if he is going to buy a Zune and you can bet his answer will be pretty similar.

That said, it's insane to expect any major software to be 100% bug free at launch. Patching is just a fact of life, and not a big deal.

People can bitch and moan all they want about Microsoft, but thier operating system is on around 95% of desktops around the world, so they obviously patching doesn't seem to worry us that much :-)
  • kalitass
uhmmm Gate, You are so jelous. You cannot stand still when you know Jobs found somethings as iPod,iPhone especialy MacOS GUI.
  • mike
Remember when MS said they were going to hit the game markets with xbox and the responses they got from that..and everyone had a big laugh about how they wouldnt get anywhere.

    MS deserves some credability.

Btw. its all a matter of prespective. some of you really need to think in more than one perspective, not just the "I" perspective. If you where BG what would you be thinking, if you were Stevie then what would you think? and if you were a current nokia user and then?

Trust me. a good looking phone isnt going to get you that far. the LG chocolate phone was one of the best looking phones out, but the software side really SUCKED!! who knows. we need to wait and see.
  • Sub
Well, it's become even more obvious to more people:

    1. Bill gates is a dick and becomes completely afraid of any competition, he knows that if anyone is going to do well in the "super phone" industry it's Apple. Look at the iPod, you'd have to be a total dumbass not to get that.

    2. Billy Boy needs to understand that Apple knows how to do software, and before he complains about them, he needs to get off his god damn ass and make up a few ideas of his own so that Microsoft doesn't have to copy every last little idea from Apple and other companies and do it half-asses.

    3. I got news for you, Microsoft has really done it this time, by making it is so obvious that they have copied everything but the intelligent coding of Apple (which is the damn reason it's so secure) from Apple that the people have realized this, and they know apple is more secure and stable, and, compaired to a machine that can even run vista (besides being one) is pretty cheaper.

What he is doing is like cheating on a test and complaining to the teacher that the person he cheated off of is stupid and then challenges the student to a battle of whits.

    EKIN:

Learn to proofread properly before taking a "holier-than-thou" stance on behalf of someone who is attacked for the quality of their products. :-)

"...as if you deserve a metal..." Whoops, did you mean medal?

    "New flash..." News flash?

"...live wit the fact apple will always be 2nd to MS..." Well, what we really have to live WITH (note the "h") is the fact that Microsoft's dominance is a result of predatory marketing practices, and basically being in the right place at the right time. That's the wonderful thing about American economics and politics.... you can be the shoddiest, dirtiest, crappiest, most talentless, meanest bastard in the room and still be on top by being in the right place at the right time.

If you want to talk about quality of products, Apple wins over Microsoft hands down (unless you like dealing with security updates, viruses and malware several times a week).

So sit down and shut up.
  • Cares A. Lot
I don't really care about his comments, they're obviously what they have to be. Of course he's going to promote M$ wherever he can, that's his job. The thing you should commenting on is his appearance on the Daily Show. Holy. Friggin. Awkward. How M$ has kept it together with the world's richest, most humorless dork and raging jackass ultra-bald president is beyond me.

M$ will blow Apple away with 300 different versions of Vista mobile 5 years from now, so look out.

You are obviously clueless spouting this ancient myth.

Look at the majority shareholders page for AAPL and surprise, surprise no William H. Gates III listed there. Type "AAPL" in Yahoo and see for yourself.

    ekin,

The SURPRISING part is that I'm using Windows 2000 and do not own a working Mac. I have a Mac, but it's broken :)

But I'm not a big Microsoft fan. I just use their software because I have to. And I choose the lesser of all evils, Windows 2000, since at the moment it's the most stable Windows of them all. And I don't use Microsoft office or any other products. There are much better and often free alternatives to all their software apart of the OS.

As for the "I am the wrong person to ask" quote, I believe it's related to "I like to dial numbers with one hand, and maybe I’m the only one.". I might be wrong, but that's how I understand it.
  • I think Bill has a valid point, dailing phone number with one hand holding and one hand dialing seem counter intuitive.
  • Roel
Hey ekin: let me just first quote you on something
"You attention seeking mac users are so quick to criticise everything that comes out of this mans mouth. You act as if you deserve a metal for being mac users." Now back to business first of all I take it you can't spell. since the word is MEDAL not METAL and it is not because we are MAC users that gives us the right it is the fact that we actually use a stable operating system if you have not noticed Vista is nothing but a MAC OS X knock off so before you start your rant do some research and don't come to the game unarmed...Roel

What are you smoking? Bill Gates own exactly zero percent of Apple. If you are referring to the 150m shares of non-voting stock that MS purchased as part of a licensing deal back in 1998, they don't even own that anymore. They sold that at quite a profit many moons ago.
  • Duh
In the end, Microsoft will commoditize any market where Apple or anyone else is successful at innovating. This is the REAL Microsoft story. Pump up the brand, tout features that will never come to pass, copy the innovators, and deliver on 80% of the promise. That''s been the story with every version of WIn32 from Windows NT thru Vista. The Zune will commoditize the music player market just as soon as Microsoft puts out 1 or 2 more releases and figures out the business model - which is a possibility now that the XBox creator is running the show. Live.com is essentially MSN 2.0 - there's no real business model - it's just Microsoft playing around with Web 2.0 technologies and copying Google, Yahoo, and the rest. But give it a year or two and Live.com will become the entry point to Windows, IE, Office, XBox, Zune, etc. Don't kid yourselves. Microsoft doesn't care about innovation OR software - they care about winning - and they probably will.
  • Dude?
I think Bill's right - I can't stand iPods and if the iPhone operates anywhere near like the infantile software they place on apple products, then he's preemptively right again.

Aw, what am I saying... Poor Apple guys... Keep arguing your points on the internets...
  • Keane
He really won't buy an iPhone,he might create his own! LOLz. Just like Zune. :P
Anyways, iPhone has really been bugging me. Don't you think that all these things about iPhone are just 'hype'? Come to think of it. iPhone is just a touch-screen phone combined with an iPod feature. What's so special about that? If I have an iPod, then iPhone comes... why in this world am I going to buy an iPhone if I already have my iPod?! O_o
  • dennis

Man, I love how apple haters rip on MS all the time... like Apple doesn't ever 'copy' others ideas. Slapping a ultra cool design on a product, doesn't mean that they didn't copy (or build upon) some other product.

Apple sells to early adopters, Microsoft gets the rest of the bell curve.
  • John
Neither Bill Gates nor Microsoft have Apple stocks anymore.
Dialing number with one hand is a point but WHO dials numbers today anyway? You have your numbers in your phone. You dial persons. Gates lives in the past like his software.

If you listen to a number of Bill Gates interviews, you'll find he is never direct ...he'll start on a very positive note, continue with some vague statements that Microsoft is doing really great, and end without a proper answer.
Its not one or two questions that he would do this, ... one question after another. Heres the basic template : -.

[Q] Is it true that when nobody's around you use a Mac?
[A] Well obviously its been a very important issue for us. But we are working very hard to make better softwares so that we can deal with that. Its a great improvement from what we have done in the past and everybody would really benefit from it.

    [Q]er .. should I repeat the question?

[A]Absolutely, we are very certain about that. Everybody at Microsoft is working ....

You might wanna wipe the brown stain from your nose. You've been sticking your nose up Apple's ass a bit too much.

All of you MAC boys are really stupid. Hackers do not attack systems that the majority does not use. Microsoft products are being attacked constantly because so many use it, if MAC had that level of popularity, it would be attacked at the same level. No OS is safe, there are always ways to get in and use information against it. However I understand why BG would state that MS is better at writing software, OFFICE is EVERYWHERE, even MAC has a version. Powerpoint is a standard at any corporate meeting. At the end of the day, MAC is allowed its "elitist" status as a powerful OS because no one truly uses it, why? Simple, all games are MS, all decent programs are MS, and P.C. which run MS are cheaper then a MAC.

If you didn't realize, STEVE JOBS wants MACS to be exclusive because it allows rich people to buy a new MAC every time a new OS comes out, you can't just buy more powerful parts.

In conclusion, you are all hating a guy richer then you and your brown nosing Jobs is making even him laugh at how naive you are.
  • Marc Heusser
Bill Gates missed the key point of the iPhone: It's neither the features, nor the design, nor the software - but the user interface that is crucial here. The smaller the device, and the more everyday use, and the more functions, the more the user interface becomes key - as anyone will know who regularly types SMS messages on these keyboards. Unfortunately for Microsoft - as Steve Jobs said: Boy, have we patented it :-)
  • Not to pick apart anyone's comments here, but in response to Chris's comment (3rd comment down from top), Bill DOES NOT own any part of Apple. I'm assuming you were referring to the $150 million investment that Microsoft made in Apple back in the 90's. Well, those stocks were non-controlling stocks and were bought back long ago. This is a statement that I hear people make all the time....that Gates owns some of Apple. He never had ANY control of Apple. Even $150 million worth of stock back when the investment was made wasn't nearly enough to control Apple. Even back then, you'd have to buy billions (not millions) of dollars worth of stock to control anything. Regardless, it was just to resolve lawsuits in that time anyway.

apple always said mac technologie was superior, and now guess...what mac hardware have inside is the same hardware PC have !!! strange LOL

LG and HTc already have touch screen mobiles....and guess more feautures than iphone...and no one is talking on tv about that !! why ??

I'm sorry, but I have several Windows machines, and now TWO Macs, just having added a new iMac. For all the talk about how many "patches" Windows requires, my opinion is that OS X is no better. My impression is that Apple tends to be a bit smarter about patches, keeping the details quiet, and releasing a big bundle of updates all at once in a single update, as opposed to Microsoft's tact of releasing them all individually and publishing the details. If Microsoft released a single update each month and called it a "security update" or a "functionality enhancer", the perceptions would all be changed. Instead, they continue to share the ugly details (while Apple keeps them hidden), and they (MS) continue to take a beating from those who don't know any better.

P.S. I also own an iPhone. No kidding - it's an awesome device. Great as a phone, lots of utility, and simply a joy to use.
  • Bellingham
I think it's funny when people say Microsoft stole Mac's GUI idea. Mac users need to quit embarrassing themselves and do a little history. It came from Xerox retards. I use both Macs and PCs and both have their benefits. It's as stupid as the Chevy vs. Ford type arguments. It's all about pride. They could both learn from each other. I'm very often surprised at how many common sense usability elements are missed by each side. Now that's weird. Ya gotta wonder, "do these people actually use their own stuff?" The 1-button mouse? I don't have a paw. "oh, you just gotta push this button at the same time..." Gee, I thought the big idea was to not have to type so much like the PC's. You have to go to the bottom right of a panel to resize it? You can't just grab anywhere in the bar to move it? I do appreciate the simplicity of installing and removing applications, quick boot times, and the best yet is the parallels where you can run both OS's. Now THAT was smart. It would be nice if there was a little more 3rd party competition for Mac software. I get tired of having iTunes etc shoved down my throat. You mean Apple hasn't figured out the subscription music service idea is the future of being able to listen to anything you want whenever you want and not just little 30 sec clips unless you pay for each individual song? Egad, pioneers? Apple gets a few things right now and then, but they sure shouldn't be boasting. Then again, if you don't even have 10% market share, boast away little guy. Not that many people are listening.

Bill Gates and Microsoft can be summed up neatly: Vista and Zune, 2 colossal failures with zero innovation. A sad company and pretty much a laughingstock.
