FIC Neo1973 – Linux Based iPhone Rival Coming in March (Specs, Photo, Video)
February 15, 2007 by dennis
FIC’s Neo1973 is the first ever mobile phone to be based on an open source operating system. Neo1973 is powered by a modified distribution of Linux, dubbed OpenMoko (although it’s also compatible with Windows Mobile). Its touchscreen 2.8 inch display even beats the Apple iPhone, as it supports a very high screen resolution of 480×640 (versus iPhone’s 320×480), all while remaining relatively unexpensive.
FIC Neo1973’s hardware specs:
Processor: Samsung S3C2410AL-26 (Capable of running up to 266 MHz)
Memory: 64MB Samsung NAND flash
RAM: 128MB SDRAM (2x Samsung K4M511633C)
Networks: GSM/GPRS
Display: 2.8″ 480×640 toppoly (tpo) TD028TTEC1 module, using a Toshiba JBT6K74 TFT LCD Driver Chipset. Touchscreen.
Extras: microSD-Card, Bluetooth, USB, 2.5mm stereo jack, vibrate option.
Accessories: Bluetooth headset.
As for its release date, Sean Moss-Pultz, FIC’s product development manager, told LinuxDevices that “We were hoping for January. Now, there will be two phases. The first [was] Feb. 11, with free phones for prominent open source community members. The real sale date will be March 11. That’s when the online store opens, and everyone can buy one direct, for about $350.”
Neo1973 is a mobile phone to put on your watchlist, since if successful, this newly emerging concept of using an open source OS on a rather powerful piece of hardware could become very attractive to more cell phone manufacturers, due to the simple fact that it’s very cost effective.
