Ugandan Parliamentarians Clash Over iPhone

February 19, 2007 by dennis

In Uganda, a small impoverished African nation, esteemed parliamentarians almost came to fists one against another, right on the parliament’s floor. While there are many issues that face this country, such as rapid spread of AIDS and joblessness, the hot button topic today was the Apple iPhone.

A group of parliamentarians led by Hon. MP Minister John Nasasira, claimed that many members of the parliament can’t be reached at important times due to lack of communications. He, and those supporting him, demanded that the government provides each parliament member with an Apple iPhone, once it’s available later this year.

Many MP’s supported this motion, claiming that they’re unavailable for votes and other important parliamentary affairs due to lack of mobile phones. According to them they’re “important members of society and therefore deserved a good looking and working mobile device like the iPhone from America.”

However their opponents were not convinced. “We don’t need those “new fangled iPhones””, shouted out one parliament member in protest, while the Prime Minister responded by saying that the MP’s are already some of the highest paid citizens of Uganda, and that they don’t need another benefit in addition to their already high salary.

The motion was denied, to great disappointment of Mr Nasasira and his supporters.

huh. hipfox doesn’t specify a source for this story, it’s nowhere on google news, and i can’t find any mention of this bill on the ugandan parliament’s website.

this sounds suspicious to me. not that rent-seeking or even out-and-out embezzlement would be out of place in ugandan politics… but i’m not sure i believe this business about an iphone ‘motion’ in their parliament…

    snopes, anyone?
