Namco Develops Games for Apple iPhone

March 1, 2007 by dennis

Gaming Bits posted an interview with Scott Rubin, Namco Networks/Games Vice President. Namco-Bandai Games (from now on just Namco) is a large Japanese-based games developer/publisher, and is a major player in the mobile games market.

Having already released games through Apple’s iTunes Music Store, Namco has already been reportedly working hard on iPhone games development, and Mr Rubin confirmed this while answering one of Gaming Bits’ writers Rivithed’s interview questions.

Namco

GB: With the upcoming iPhone, is Namco Networks looking into that platform as well? Do you think there may be some other opportunities there with the larger screen and different interaction?

SR: We are without a question one of the handful of game publishers that Apple has chosen to work with and we’re also a top partner of Cingular, who will be selling the device. At this time, there hasn’t been too much information in terms of games. Our whole thing is mobile entertainment on wireless devices. We’re one of the few publishers that directly publishes games on almost every wireless platform. Not just Java phones, but iPods, Sidekicks, Palm, Windows Mobile. If the opportunity is there, we will put our games on the iPhone. It’s our mission.

Of course Namco is not the only games developer producing games for the iPhone, as Electronic Arts and Popcap Games have also confirmed their involvement in iPhone games development. Apple itself has recently been recruiting games developers as well, which might indicate that it’s building up its own games development studio.

However, what is interesting to note is that according to Mr Rubin “a handful” of game publishers are working with Apple on iPhone games. These are of course yet to be revealed, apart of Namco itself and the companies mentioned above, but it’s an interesting development for the iPhone nevertheless.

The full interview with Mr Rubin which touches more Apple related questions, including about Ms. PAC-MAN recent release on Apple’s iPod, is available at Gaming Bits via Pocket Picks.
