RIM co-CEO says iPhone made smartphones cool again

Research In Motion (RIM) seems to think that the iPhone will boost their PDA sales, contrary to what stocks have shown so far (the company’s shares lost -7.9% the day after the iPhone was announced). Speaking in an interview at the CTIA Wireless 2007 Conference was RIM’s co-CEO Officer Michael Lazaridis.
Mr Lazaridis recognized one of Apple’s core strengths as well as one person in particular. “Hats off to Steve [Jobs],” said Lazaridis. “He made smartphones cool again. Now everyone wants one. He helped the entire industry.”
“We complement each other really well,” Lazaridis went on to say: “We both focus on two entirely different markets. One is pure consumer and pure consumable. One is pure function and pure productivity.”
At the same time only last month another RIM co-chief executive, Jim Balsillie, said “It’s kind of one more entrant into an already very busy space with lots of choice for consumers. But in terms of a sort of a sea-change for BlackBerry, I would think that’s overstating it,” about the Apple iPhone.
Previously, when the iPhone was announced, Research Director of the ICAP, Richard Williams, called the iPhone “a considerable threat” to RIM. He went on to say that Apple’s reputation for designing “cool” products could lead people away from the Blackberry.
