iPhone in 2007 in major European countries, in v2.0 in Canada?
July 29, 2007 by dennis
As you might remember Apple originally announced “late 2007″ European release date for iPhone — however, some new information came out of Apple’s planned quarterly financial results conference call (listen online – in QuickTime).
During the conference call Apple’s COO Tiim Cook revealed that “We [Apple] plan to go into a few major countries in Europe [with the iPhone] next quarter, to move across other countries in Europe in 2008 and enter Asia in 2008 as well“. While that’s probably bad news for iPhone fans in certain parts of Europe that will have to wait until 2008 to get it, this could probably be attributed to the importance of 3G in Europe, as well as insignificance of smaller European markets in the big scheme of Apple things.
Nevertheless, the really interesting and rather disappointing part is that Canada wasn’t even mentioned in that list… So we’re not American, and we’re not a major European country, nor a minor one, let alone Asian, but we’d still like to know when we can expect it in stores here…
Wrote iPhone World reader “Saxonsaint“:
“I work for Rogers Wireless and I have asked every executive I’ve come in contact with about when we will get the iPhone… The best information I’ve been told is that Mr Rogers and Mr Jobs are in continued discussion. Apparently Apple has required that Rogers lower is Data rates to accommodate full use of the iPhones functions, this appears to be a stipulation that will take time to sort out. Also, just like the Razr I’ve been told that Rogers will likley wait for the 2nd generation iPhone as the 1st has caused ATT issues that cost time and money to resolve.”
If that is the case, it would be quite disappointing to wait until iPhone v2.0 is out (especially while our neighbours down South are enjoying their shiny new iPhones). But nevertheless, it’s very admirable (if it’s true), that Apple is standing up for better Canadian data transfer rates. Canadian telecom industry needed a good shake for a long time, and if it takes Apple to shake the tree in order to bring our mobile data transfer rates closer to average international rates, so be it.
