iPhone NES v0.20.1 + Games

August 10, 2007 by dennis

A new version of iPhone NES emulator is now available. The iPhone Nintendo Entertainment System emulator allows iPhone owners to play classic 8-bit NES games on Apple iPhone, and this new version adds audio support and more.

iPhone NES emulator comes with some very popular NES games, such as Mario Bros, Megaman 2, and the original Metroid.

Installation instructions: ROMs need to be placed in /var/root/Media/ROMs/NES.

NOTE ON iPhone NES Emulator Sound; it is required that you disable mediaserverd, and only works through the headphones. A couple of easy aliases can be added to your .profile to disable or re-enable mediaserverd if you are using MobileShell:

alias nosound=”launchctl unload /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/coreaudiod.plist”
alias sound=”launchctl load /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/coreaudiod.plist”

Of course it’s suggested for everyone that still has the old version to upgrade to iPhone NES v0.20.1, which you can download below.

NOTE: A newer version of the NES emulator is now available! Please consider downloading iPhone NES.APP v2.0 by clicking here instead of the version you see below.

NOTE: A NEW VERSION OF IPNONE NES EMULATOR, V0.31 IS NOW AVAILABLE, PLEASE DOWNLOAD IT INSTEAD OF THE VERSION POSTED HERE.

Is there a step by step guide on installing the NES emulator? I keep trying but the CMD prompt keeps freezing and I think I’m missing a step!

  • http://www.iphoneworld.ca dennis

    Hi Andrew,

Author’s readme and changelog were added as downloads, see download linke above.

    And here’s from the project’s wiki…

Reported by ss2trunks69, Aug 09 (2 days ago)

Ok, here’s how I did it. If you’ve already modified your phone using jailbreak and iphoneinterface,
then you’re halfway there. If not, here are the links on how to get started:

    Windows:
    http://www.hacktheiphone.com/iphone_ringtone_installation_windows.html

    Mac (Intel):
    http://www.hacktheiphone.com/iphone_ringtone_installation.html

The instructions in the above links are for adding ringtones to the phone, but all you need to pay
attention to is getting the folders set up and running jailbreak to “open” the phone. After that,
    install SSH.

    http://www.hacktheiphone.com/iphone_install_ssh_windows.html

The above link doesn’t include a necessary file, au.asn.ucc.matt.dropbear.plist, but the file is in
    the Mac SSH zip.

    http://iphone.port21.com/Code/iPhone_SSH_Install_for_Mac.zip

Once you’ve downloaded the Mac SSH zip, copy the au.asn.ucc.matt.dropbear.plist (it may not
say “.plist” at the end, add it) file and the iTunesMobileDevice.dll file to the original Windows SSH
folder. Then run the sshify-windows file and it should install everything for you. After that,
download WinSCP (http://winscp.net/eng/download.php). Go into your phone’s settings and find
the IP address. Put that in the “host name” box. The user name is “root” (no quotations),
password is “dottie” (no quotations). In the protocol drop down box, select SCP. Hit ok and let it
connect. Then find the NES.app folder in the left box and copy it to the /Applications folder.
Right click on the NES file and check all the boxes with an “x” next to them. You only need to
check the one that says “execute” (if you hover the cursor over the box), but my phone is on the
Mac right now syncing and I forget exactly which box it is.

After that, you need to make a rom folder. Open terminal and type the following:

    mkdir /var/root/Media/ROMs/
    mkdir /var/root/Media/ROMs/NES/

You can then transfer roms into the /var/root/Media/ROMs/NES/ folder and that’s it. I’m pretty
sure that’s everything, but it’s 2:18 in the morning so I may have left out some things. Thanks go
out to ajonessn and my friend Phil for helping me figure this out.

    Hopefully this helps you guys.

Also, check out NES.app over here – http://www.iphoneworld.ca/news/2007/08/11/nesapp-v028-another-iphone-nes-emulator/

It’s a parralel project to iPhone NES, both authors collaborate closely.

  • Andrew Rodarte

Uh Oh, More trouble. So I have hacked my iPhone for ringtones successfully but it just doesn’t like the games! What I’m suck on now is that when I click on sshify-windows.bat it comes up with iTunesMoblieDevice.dll not found. Blah! I have this specific file on my desktop but now I need a little more help. I appreciate the help! Thanks!

  • http://www.yahoo.com Wha

Go to hell. You are maliciously trying to play software that isn’t in the Web 2.0 format that Apple specifically allowed programmers to use for it’s iPhone. Let the powers of Jesus Christ stomp you down, UFC style!! f*cking sinner!

  • LMAO

    You made me giggle…

  • elizabeth Medina

i when through the whole How to add custom ringtones/system sounds and when i got to step 9 as i entered jailbreak it gave me an error message

jailbreak is not recognized as an internal or external command operable program or batch file

    c:\phonedmg>

    what do i do?

  • http://www.iphoneworld.ca dennis

Hi Elizabeth, you might want to post on the site that posted these instructions, they might have a better idea than we do… We’re just linking to them:)

    Best,

    Frustrated…Need Help!
I recently installed “installer.app” on my iphone and then used it to install the curent version of “NES.app v0.99.04″. Everything installed fine but none of the games in the NES Emulator appear…it’s totally empty. Only a “preferences” button is there.

Were the games bundled with the “NES.app” or do they have to be loaded on separately? If so…where can I find the ROM games?

    Thanx in advance…jay

  • http://www.iphoneworld.ca dennis

    Hi Jay,

    I don’t believe Nes.app comes with games.
You can check out this library of NES ROMs here though – http://www.theoldcomputer.com/MainMenu.htm :)

  • http://none Tracy Gillete

I have been successful at loading NES 0.99.04 and can play super mario 3, but can’t get audio.

I’ve setup the aliases, and unloaded the coreaudiod as the page above describes, but I don’t get audio?

People seem to get audio, what could I be doing wrong?

  • http://www.iphoneworld.ca dennis

    Hi Tracy,

I am not quite sure… Maybe one of the readers could help? Don’t be shy to voice your suggestions, folks:)

    Hi,

In order to play games you need to download some Nintendo ROM images…. The easiest way to do that is to make a google search for “nes rom downloads” :)

    Hope this helps!

    Best,

    Dennis
