Zork lives on iPhone! Frotz Z-Machine Interpreter for iPhone v0.1
August 14, 2007 by dennis
iPhone NES emulators and iPhone Doom ports are all nice and dandy, but some people crave for even more classic games… That’s where Frotz Z-Machine Interpreter for iPhone comes in.
Frotz is an interpreter for Infocom games and other Z-machine games, and iPhone Frotz is the iPhone port of the program made by spathiwa. So now you could finally enjoy Zork, Adventure, or Rogue on your iPhone! Note for everyone that was born after text games stopped being popular: these games otherwise known as interactive fiction allow you to control your character through text-based interaction (in other words, there’s no pretty pictures to stare at, but some of these games were so immersive that people played them for months).

Author’s note:
Requires a jailbroken/sshd-enabled phone to install. To install from binary distribution, download and extract the iphonefrotz.tar.gz file. Copy the resulting Frotz.app directory to your iPhone. Create a directory /var/root/Library/Frotz/Games and copy your Z-Machine game data files there.
A good starting point for exploring the wealth of Interactive Fiction is here.
