O2 Chief Executive praises iPhone and defends Apple’s right to get its share from O2’s profits

The Times reported on Friday that there’s another reason as to why the paper believes Apple will announce its deal with UK carrier O2 soon, although an official announcement of O2 being Apple’s partner of choice in the UK is still to come within the next few days.

The Times quoted O2 Chief Executive Peter Erskine who defended Apple’s condition of sharing the income from calls and data transfers. Mr Erskine said: “If sharing revenue brings a bigger pie to the table, then we’ll be happy to share that pie . . . The revenue-sharing model will play an increasingly important role in the future of converged communications.”

In Erskine’s opinion revenue-sharing deals are still advantageous for the operators. They are unheard of within the rest of the industry. Vodafone for example is suspected to have withdrawn from the bid for marketing the iPhone because of its reluctance to pay Apple 10 per cent from calls. The bidding war for winning the right for iPhone is supposed to be the most intense since the 3G auction in 2000.

Mr Erskine also praised the iPhone describing it as an “iconic device with unique features that have proven to have tremendous appeal to large numbers of customers in the US”.

Irrespectively of which operator is going to be announced as the official Apple’s partner everyone is expecting the iPhone to appear on the British market before the Christmas shopping rush.
