Silly: iPhone Weather App Doesn’t Control Airlines

In one of Apple’s recent iPhone ads, a silly commercial, of an airline pilot’s flight that gets delayed by 3 hours, but he looked up the weather on his iPhone, relayed it over communications, and they confirmed it and let the plane take off apparantly
Well, a man in Memphis, that was trying to grab a flight out, had his flight delayed. One of the pilots in the plane wrote all of this down in his blog, mind you. Continuing, he says only moments after telling his passengers that there was a delay due to bad weather, a passenger using an iPhone checked the weather and told a flight attendant that it looked clear.

So then the flight attendant speaks to the captain, “Some guy with an iPhone says the weather is good,”. She continues: “and wants to know what the real reason is for the delay. Is something wrong with the plane?”
Well, I don’t blame him for trying, but here’s the response he got as a public address announcement (everyone could hear) : “If the passenger with the iPhone would be kind enough,” And he went on to say:
“…to use it to check the weather at our alternate airport, then calculate our revised fuel burn due to being rerouted, then call our dispatcher to arrange our amended release, then make a call to the nearest traffic control center to arrange a new slot time (among all the other aircraft carrying passengers with iPhones), we’ll then be more than happy to depart. Please ring your call button to advise the flight attendant and your fellow passengers when you deem it ready and responsible for this multimillion-dollar aircraft and its 84 passengers to safely leave.”
Here’s the heads up incase you get a seemingly good idea from one of Apple’s iPhone commercials. Just a thought, you know, that weather on an online weather map isn’t the same as airlines use.
