New Google Maps Update Includes GPS Simulation, but not for the iPhone

The latest version of Google Maps is now available, and comes with a handy new feature that allows you to see where you are in relation to the map you’re viewing.

Google Maps’ new ability allows you to see your location on the map, while you’re using it, through the technology of bouncing around Cellphone towers to pin-point where you are.

This feature is called ‘My Location’, and it’s activated by pressing the ‘0′ (that’s a zero) key – it then slaps a blue dot where you reportedly are on the map.

This is all very handy, though there is currently no support for the iPhone, or other handsets like those by Samsung, LG, or Palm OS. Apple will have to personally look into and fix this hitch, as Google can’t. The handsets that are usable, are among all BlackBerrys, recently release Motorola, or Sony Ericsson phone, several Windows Mobile devices, and a Symbian Series 60 using its 3rd Edition OS.

It’s too bad the iPhone isn’t supported, as it’s a decent feature to have. I guess we’ll have to see what Apple’s take on supporting this program is. If you use Google Maps and don’t want to use this feature, it can be turned off – and Google even says they aren’t collecting personal information from its use.

Google Maps Mobile is available here.
