AT&T: iPhone Is Still OurPhone

December 7, 2007 by Patrick

AT&T, in a not so surprising move, announced this week that it will not unlock iPhones for use with other providers.

They will unlock other devices and handsets if you fulfill the contract, or if you pay full price for it, but the exception is the iPhone. AT&T’s GSM network itself is open to using outside technology and devices, however, they aren’t guaranteed to work well.

As pointed out by our source, this move by AT&T comes shortly after Verizon Wireless announced on Nov. 27th that it will accept non-native devices on its network. Google also announced the Open Handset Alliance software platform for devices.

Michael Coe, an AT&T spokesman, commented: “The actions of Google and Verizon didn’t prompt any changes at AT&T”First, we did not make an announcement,” and he went on to say, “Second, it’s always been this way.

Apple and AT&T are getting strict lately. First they completely denounce unlocking manually/jailbreaking, then they get sold unlocked in Germany and France, and soon after Singapore gets threatened by Apple for selling devices unlocked.

It seems they may be losing money, albeit they can’t be losing that much with a device as popular as the iPhone is.
