Roaming iPhone charges are expensive, Wired magazine editor discovers

The editor-in-chief of Wired, a magazine that we really like, made a sudden discovery that prompted a Financial Times article: while on a trip to China he discovered that iPhone data roaming fees without a special plan are expensive!
The editor-in-chief of Wired, Chris Anderson, has set his iPhone to check for new e-mail every 10 minutes, did not sign up for a special data plan, and departed on a plane to China. While in China, his iPhone was obviously checking his e-mail every 10 minutes via Edge, of which as an editor of a popular magazine he received hundreds of every day.
Upon receiving an SMS from AT&T about contacting support in order to “prevent a costly bill” Mr Anderson found out that this automatic mail checking already cost him over $2,100, for “a phone that I wasn’t using,” according to Mr Anderson. “I was simply walking around with the phone in my pocket,” he said.
The good news for Mr Anderson is that AT&T agreed to transfer his plan to one that would cut his bill for a service he did not need to use to “only” $300, the bad news are that “they said they would call back but I haven’t heard anything, even though they have two phone numbers for me,” he said.
A representative of AT&T, the exclusive Apple iPhone distributor and operator, whose services Mr Anderson was using, said that it’s not aware of this situation, while note that “we have international plans for the iPhone so that people don’t rack up costs like that.”
