GPS Module for the iPhone (For Real!) by PartFoundry

December 15, 2007 by Patrick

Despite TomTom’s rising of hope for developing a real GPS module for the iPhone, and then the soon-after destruction of that hope when it was found to be fake, someone seems to be determined to make it work.

Now, an engineering firm, Partfoundry, seems to think the iPhone is completely in need and should not be overlooked, for GPS capability. They’re working on a module that connects to the main docking port of the iPhone, and provides “16 channels of satellite reception of your choice“.

That last bit, of your choice, refers to the module requiring a jailbroken iPhone to access, and although this time the GPS support is confirmed, the price and waiting time are somewhat steep.

Partfoundry expects to be shipping out these modules by February, with a cost of $89 per unit. You can check out the GPS on Partfoundry’s website.
