My Location in Google Maps – a substitute for GPS?

December 27, 2007 by Krzysztof

My Location is a service that allows for a location to be determined through use of cell phone tower signals. According to our source, there are already other providers of that new kind of navigation service on the market.

Michael Johnston in his article at iPhone Alley writes about iLocation, a third party application developed by Chris Miles. This program allows an owner of a jailbroken iPhone to use a beta service of My Location built into the most recent version of Google Maps but not yet accessible by the iPhone. It gathers cell tower information from the iPhone, sends it off to Google, Google then sends the longitude and latitude information back to the iLocation. The longitude and latitude information can be then sent to Google Maps and plotted.

As Google stated, My Location is still in a phase of development. Its accuracy may not be that impressive (within 1000 meters). However, the author of iLocation has managed to get better results by driving around and collecting a wider range of data.
