Electronic Arts exec hints at frustration with iPhone gaming state, Apple

Although it’s been widely reported almost a year ago that EA Games were in negotiations with Apple to port some games over to the iPhone, it seems that they have to stand in line like everyone else for the coveted iPhone SDK.
While speaking at a CES 2008 panel session Travis Boatman, Electronic Arts VP of worldwide studios mobile division called it a “capable” for gaming phone. “But it’s a replacement for someone who had a Razr before. They still want their content but there’s no distribution platform in place so there’s a negative impact on the industry,” he went on to say.

According to him due to the fact that the iPhone is so far locked out for third party programs this has an overall negative effect on the mobile games industry, since iPhone users may be just giving up on games they used to play on previous mobiles.
Our take is that he’s actually more worried that underground iPhone hacker-programmers will have enough time to get into this market due to the head start they got, which is a distinct possibility, keeping in mind that the first commercial iPhone games engine is already under development, and not by a big company.
