Rumor Bin: Italian and Swiss iPhone Carriers Already Chosen?
February 1, 2008 by Patrick
Although there’s been no mention of it officially, a few signs in the iPhone’s last couple firmware updates, starting with update v1.1.2, deep under the cover of the firmware itself, were .PLIST hooks that linked to “TIM” – or Telecom Italia Mobile.
These code strings, named something like ‘TIM_Italy.plist’, were scattered around in both v1.1.2, and v1.1.3, and made several connections to AT&T, T-Mobile, and O2.
Telecom Italia Mobile is also partly owned by Telefonica, the same company that controls O2 in the UK. Although it’s quite possible that these links are wrong, as they have been in the past, it’s still a possible connection, nonetheless. More-so, Spain’s main telephone provider, Telefonica, is said to be Apple’s choice of a provider, and they will be making an official announcement at the World Mobile Congress in February.

That’s not all, apparently Swisscom is looking to make an announcement soon, and expecting the iPhone to be available by late February in Switzerland. Both releases are expected to be 3G from the first day.
