The Reason Why There Isn’t a 32GB iPhone, only a 32GB iPod Touch; No Need For New Contract Upgrading From 8GB iPhone

A caller over at RedEye’s iPhone Therefore I Blog, Myron, pointed out why we didn’t see bigger iPhones earlier, exactly.
The caller writes: “There is a technical reason for the iPod Touch to have double the capacity of the iPhone. The iPod Touch has 2 flash chips in it (NAND 48-pin TSOP). The iPhone only has 1 flash chip in it. That’s all that can fit. Look at the teardown photos of the devices. There’s no room for any more chips. The highest capacity flash chip currently available is a 16GB chip from Samsung. The new Samsung chip was just released in January. Hence the capacity bump. Before this, the densest chip was 8GB.”

This certainly clears up any misconceptions about the devices. Yes, it seems the iPhone is crammed to the brim with chips, but it’s likely only a matter of time until we do see iPhones with double the current capacity.
Additionally, it was confirmed by iPhone Therefore I Blog’s Scott Kleinberg that you do not have to sign a new contract to upgrade from an 8GB to a 16GB iPhone. Confirmed once (so far) by an AT&T rep, all you have to do is swap the SIM between devices, and you’re good to go. Much like iPhone Therefore I Blog requested, if this works for you, please let us know as well.
