The iPhone and iPod Touch – Beholders of All Knowledge (of the Wikipedia)

February 7, 2008 by Patrick

You’ve had to have thought at one point in time, that you’d love to be able to just look something simple up on Wikipedia, without having to wait for the slow EDGE network to load it up. That, or you just desire the ability to carry around the most information ever conceived on a mobile device.

Yes, someone finally hacked out a Wikipedia app for your iPhone and iPod Touch. Although as for the iPhone, do you really have two-point-two gigabytes to spare off your probably older 8GB (or even 4GB — if anyone still has those) model? Yes, the English version of Wikipedia is over two gigabytes in size.

How would you go about getting the aforementioned app? Especially with that size, you must be wondering. Patrick Collison has mobilized it, and made an extensive Youtube video tutorial installation guide to boot.

First off, for anything you might want to know about the project, head to Mr. Collison’s website. Second, the two required files for the installation are the App itself, and the English or German dump, which would be the massive information download we mentioned earlier.

If you have any trouble, you can try the Wikipedia Google group, specifically for this app.

There are several problems existing, though, and its been said that the program is easy to crash, and that there are several empty links. Still, though, small price to pay for carrying around a Wikipedia that’s so easily accessible, around with you.
