iPhone competition: Sony Ericsson XPERIA X1

February 11, 2008 by David

At Mobile World Congress 2008, Sony-Ericsson has unveiled their new phone XPERIA X1. Like its competitor iPhone, Xperia also has touch screen. Manufacturers are finally starting using that, what iPhone started last year. It’s like everyone was afraid to try touch screen before Apple.

The device is driven by slightly modified Windows Mobile platform. The modification comes in terms of user interface, since you use custom XPERIA panels instead of traditional WM ones.

The device features 3-inch, 800×480 touch screen, with a slideble QWERTY keyboard. The device is also 3G HSDPA (High-Speed Downlink Packet Access) compliant. This basically means that it has very fast data transfer rates. So uploading your videos will be as quick as downloading them.

Other features device has is GPS support, 3.2-megapixel camera, microSD slot.

The device should be available during the second half of 2008 in both North America and Europe.

“Xperia also has touch screen. Manufacturers are finally starting using that, what iPhone started last year. It’s like everyone was afraid to try touch screen before Apple.”

I would like to add that Sony Ericsson have had this feature before from mobile phones such as P800, P900 and so on and they were a success

Your comment “It’s like everyone was afraid to try touch screen before Apple.” is dead wrong. There have been countless touch screen only devices before the iPhone (heard of the apple Newton) but they ALL failed because it can’t beat a tactile keyboard and this also the iPhones short coming (why they had to drop the price to improve sales). The Japanese, again, have it right.
