New Samsung processor might lead to iPhone video conferencing

Samsung, in Barcelona’s Mobile World Congress, has unveiled their new mobile application processor, the S3C6410. It combines the power of ARM1176 processor core, clocked at up to 667MHz, and advanced hardware blocks for multimedia processing (Multi Format Codec).
This will allow for cheaper devices. However the real benefit is more advanced multimedia processing. It can playback and record MPEG4/H.263/H.264/VC1 formats with using much less power, thus increasing battery life and device’s usability.

MFC allows high-definition (SD) quality video capturing and playback at 30fps, as well as supporting two-way real-time video conferencing. In addition, the embedded hardware encoder/decoder also includes TV out capability in both the NTSC and PAL formats.
The new chip also improves 3D graphics processing, which will open wide possibilities for developers. Applications like games and other visual tasks would really benefit from it. The new chip also supports dual RAM which gives enough bandwidth to handle big resolutions without slowing down the system.
Samsung said that they expect to do sample chips in May, and begin production sometime during summer.
iPhone is based on earlier version of ARM chip, and it would only be logical for Apple to adopt it in later versions of iPhone. Who knows it might have video conferencing features built in it.
