Is Apple promoting the iPhone to full games console… or is there something more coming?
February 13, 2008 by David
On February 5th 2008 Apple has filed a trademark for the following names: “hand-held units for playing electronic games; hand-held units for playing video games; stand alone video game machines; electronic games other than those adapted for use with television receivers only; LCD game machines; electronic educational game machines; toys, namely battery-powered computer games”.

That’s an interesting collection of names. But what does it mean? Of course, the first logical choice is that maybe Apple is gearing up the iPhone to compete against the Sony Playstation Portable and the Nintendo DS.
But maybe, just maybe, Apple is conceiving some sort of gaming platform. Now we know that the iPhone is a suitable gaming platform — based on your replies in our current poll (see the right side menu of our site) — but what if this is something different?
Can they go as far as repeating their failed Pippin experiment? Or maybe something touch-screeny but games-enabled like the iPod Touch? Of course, only time will tell what Apple has in store for us.
