April Fool’s Day: Apple presents 3G iPhone at CTIA!

At the CTIA Wireless 2008, North America’s largest mobile telecom conference and expo, in an unexpected move, Apple today unveiled the prototype of the upcoming next model of the iPhone with 3G capabilities to the public.

Apart from the 3G, the new iPhone features an on-board GPS module in addition to the Google Maps MyLocation, 32GB of space, extended battery life, two cameras (now supporting video conferencing), and more… They’ve even added a haptic keyboard, so typing is easier than ever before.

There are also some interface tweaks that Apple made to it. Most notably the iPhone was given some of its mp3 siblings’ colours. Now apart of the traditional look, you can choose it in white, black, green, blue, and red.

The 3G iPhone is expected to be released on May 9 2008 in the USA, UK, Germany, France, Spain, Italy, Austria, Japan, and China. The estimated price of the device will be $600. But those that wish to preview it, can already do so at Apple’s booth at the CTIA that is currently taking place (April 1-3 2008) in Las Vegas, USA.

    Please someone confirm if this is fact or if it is just an extremely cruel april fools joke! If it is just a joke, it is NOT funny at all!

    The article is definitely not true. Steve Jobs would officially announe the new iPhone model with a keynote before we see or read anything like this.

    Agreed with the post above! This story should atleast be backed up by an update or apology as whether its a cruel joke or not. I personally dont find it funny. All of it would make sense if it were real, so I'm hoping iphoneworld doesn't let us down!

    Hasn't enough time elapsed to receive some form of update/apology to this story to clarify whether it or not it was a poorly contrived April Fools gag, or it was intended to be an authenticate news item gone awry (one that hardly anyone would believe at this point even if it was somehow true)??

    Do you (the editorial staff) not understand/care that you’ve angered many of your readers whether you intended to or not? In my opinion this is a BAD joke gone on WAY TOO LONG – I guess I’ve never understood Canadian humor or care too (this only reinforces how not funny it actually is) – in other words “TAKE-OFF HOSER!!!”

    Or, if this is geniune, please do like engadget did with the whole magenta thing and clearly recognize the fact that it is April Fool's Day and that this story is valid in spite of that....I mean, you have to give some hint either way with something as large as this, don't you? If not, this website has a sick, sick sense of humor...

    p.s. this is a Candian website - does Canada even do the whole April Fool's thing to the extent the US? forgive my ignorance on candian matters, please...

    I can appreciate that being April Fools day we should expect some funny/bogus articles; HOWEVER any credible journalist will indicate at the end of the article (or give some major hints) that this story is ficticious and intended as a joke.

    iPhoneworld - if this story is a joke you've lost some MAJOR credibility points with a LOT of your former readers!!!

  • There is no need to wait for the new 3G model. Many of the current iPhones are already 3G capable.

    I saw a video this morning, don't have the link now. It showed 3 separate videos and said they would be future TV ads. The 3 videos showed the iPhone maping, GPS and locator.

    I spoke to a friend in Apple's PR, the closed presentation with NDA did take place today, official announcement is forthcoming. Nice job on a leak!

    I just spoke to a journalist friend about it, he said the event indeed took place today but it was not open to the public but rather just a handful of invited tech reports.

    And the 3G iPhone is NOT for public display by Apple at CTIA, this story got it wrong on that one (as a previous poster said, they do not have an official booth there).

    Finally, there's apparently been an NDA all invited reporters had to sign... The event was supposed to be "closed" and no information was to be released until the official public announcement later on this week at CTIA (most likely on the closing date, the 3rd). I think this site and whoever its source is (sneaky, one of the invited reporters leaked info to iPhoneWorld it seems) will get in deep shit over this from Apple.

    What a cruel cruel joke. When I read the headline, my brain started to come up with all the excuses that it could be true (iPhone out of stock everywhere). But then hard reality came crashing down, incapacitating my already limited mental capabilities for the day.

    It is so easy to lie to those that want to believe.

    I'm torn on this one. Look at the date.. however there are enough facts there to believe it *could* be true and the latest rumours prior to this were about the 3g iphone going into limited production in may.

    OTOH we need pictures, quotes from apple etc. If it's a 'joke' kill it because it aint funny.

    So, you're not going to tell us if there's any place to find pictures, when more people might be able to catch a glance at it in person, or anything? Nah? That list of features is plenty for you, eh?

    It really pisses me off when I find an interesting headline that leads to this blog. The article that accompanies it is overwhelmingly disappointing almost 100% of the time.
