Apple has confirmed that they bought a semiconductor company called PA Semi. According to Forbes, the deal cost Apple $278 millions.

PA Semi is a company known for sophisticated and low-priced chips. Interestingly, previously Apple said that they would switch from IBM to Intel chips, or more precisely to Atom chip. Currently it is unknown if Apple is still playing for a partnership with Intel.

“[Such an acquisition is] not too unexpected,” Richard Doherty, president at researcher Envisioneering Group, told Electronic News this morning. “Apple is in a position to sell tens of millions of iPhones and wireless iPod devices. Because OS X is Unix and very aportable, this [deal] gives Apple a very tight coupling of silicon hardware and software that no other vendor has. And with the kinds of volumes Apple has, it is of course a blow to ARM and others, including Intel that this technology will be in their DNA.”

Still, Apple might use Arm chips for devices other than iPhones.

Unfortunately, you will not find any PA Semi goodness in your iPhone or iPod for quite some time. But maybe Apple has some secret device up their hands?
