AT&T increases data plan costs for 3G iPhone by $10
June 9, 2008 by James
Following today’s official 3G iPhone announcement by Steve Jobs, which quoted prices of $199/299 for 8/16GB 3G iPhone models respectively, AT&T quietly sent out a press release, stating some not-so-good-news for those that wanted to get the iPhone on the cheap.
In this press release AT&T calls the new 3G iPhone price “subsidized”, and states that with this reduced price it hopes to attract more subscribers.
The downside? 3G iPhone users will have to pay $10 more per month for a data plan as opposed to users of EDGE, which, with a contract of 24 months, means extra $240…. Which means that those that will purchase the 3G iPhone at $199 or $299 will in reality pay $439 or $539 keeping the extra $10/month in mind. Although, $30 per month would be bliss for our Canadian readers, who could only hope for similar pricing from Rogers.
According to AT&T:
- Unlimited iPhone 3G data plans for consumers will be available for $30 a month, in addition to voice plans starting at $39.99 a month.
- Unlimited 3G data plans for business users will be available for $45 a month, in addition to a voice plan.
Additionally, in an apparent bid to curb unlocked iPhone sales, the 3G iPhone will now be available only through Apple and AT&T retail stores — it won’t be available for sale online. Furthermore, the 3G iPhone will have to be activated in AT&T and Apple stores directly according to AT&T spokeswoman Sarah Andreani — although some of our reporters already witnessed this practice in action firsthand, especially in AT&T stores along the Canadian border.
It remains to be seen whether official iPhone carriers in other countries will increase the data plan rates as well.
