iPhone v2.0 firmware features

June 9, 2008 by James

Today, at the WWDC 2008, Steve Jobs announced the list of features that we’ll be getting with iPhone v2.0 firmware. iPhone v2.0 software will come preloaded for 3G iPhone users, while iPhone v1.0 and iPod Touch users will get the new firmware sometime early next month.

New v2.0 software will feature additions for enterprise users, as well as additions to the SDK, and new features for regular users.

According to Steve Jobs, the enterprise features include: Microsoft Exchange support, push email, calendars, contacts, auto-discovery, global address lookup, remote wipe, and Cisco VPN services (so now we know what was the “interoperability” agreement between Cisco and Apple).

As for the SDK, iPhone developers have access to SQL lite, OpenGL ES, OpenAL, Cocoa Touch, Xcode, and other tools. Additionally, Apple has developed a new service that will maintain a persistent IP connection to the iPhone, where a server will send pingback to the device, instead of running applications persistently in background (a-la Windows Mobile).

it’s a unified push notification service for all devs. It preserves battery life and maintains performance. And it all works over the air — WiFi and cellular. Available in September, but next month we’ll be seeding to devs,” Apple’s Scott Forstall clarified the latter.

As for endusers, there will be the following new features:
- Contacts search function (which we’ve already reported on earlier).
- Full iWork document support: Pages, Numbers, and , Keynote.
- Microsoft Office support: Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
- Bulk delete & move.

- Ability to save web/e-mail images in your library.
- Scientific calculator (that we’ve reported on earlier).
- Parental controls for web.
- Handwriting recognition (which we’ve also reported on earlier), as well as handwriting recognition for Chinese and Japanese characters (we’ve just reported that HWPen Chinese handwriting recognition program was bought out by Apple, and now we can already see its implementation here).

In his close-to-two-hour keynote at the WWDC in San Francisco, Steve Jobs discussed the new iPhone 3G, its new price points (very nice!), and highlighting some of its new applications (available soon via the developers website that is due to be launched shortly), which are sure to get iPhone and Apple enthusiasts in general excited about what is coming out this summer. One way I think they could certainlyimprove the iPhone in light of these new development kits, is to include speech and/or voice activated applications.

In today’s world where hands-free laws and sheer convenience seem to be putting a heavy demand on a user-friendly interface. What is easier than using just voice to control your handset? If you can dictate text messages, emails, conduct searches, dial from a contact list, play music and discover hidden applications just by speaking your request, I would think this would be some of the most sought after applications on any phone – especially the iPhone!

Both embedded and downloadable applications from Nuance Communications can do all of that and more…and they all work on the iPhone. The human voice is a powerful thing, and we think it is the next big step for improving the mobile device. We are excited to see what is next for the WWDC this week!
