MTS to be the third iPhone distributor in Russia.
September 5, 2008 by Krzysztof
The Associated Press reports that Russian MTS (MobileTeleSystems) has announced its deal with Apple to distribute the iPhone in Russia. We have already written in one of our articles about the second-largest operator in Russia-VimpelCom becoming the official distributor. As the leader on the Russian market MTS could not miss out on the iPhone deal. MTS will be the third carrier to offer the iPhone. Its main rivals VimpelCom and MegaFon has already announced their iPhone deals. Analyst Anna Lepetukhina from Troika Dialog says that available on different networks iPhone probably wont be subsidized.

MTS has not announced any details of the deal yet. We already know about 600000 iPhones being in use on the Russian territory. The gray market price is about $1,000, the official one is estimated at 24000 rubles ($399), which is going to be twice less, but still more than that in the USA. The stake for Apple is rather high with one of the biggest market potential outside of the USA. Will its strategy prove to be accurate – only time will tell.
