Japan not excited over iPhone 3G, Japanese iPhone sales falling

Japan is well known for its love of advanced mobile phone devices that can do almost anything at the moment, from purchasing movies and subway tickets, to watching digital TV.
That’s why it’s probably not surprising that the Japanese were not much excited by the launch of the iPhone in their country.
Since its launch in Japan the iPhone 3G has sold 200,000 units in the first two months, but sales have kept falling since, and it looks unlikely that Apple and Japanese iPhone carrier Softbank Corp. will be able to achieve their previously stated goal of 1 million 3G iPhones sold. Most likely, they will have to suffice with 500,000 sold units, states MM Research Institute.
One reason for low sales could be the higher prices that the 3G iPhone retails for in Japan: Softbank sells the 16GB iPhone model for 58,560 yen, or around $540, for current Softbank customers, or 34,560 yen, or around $320, for new customers, while requiring them to sign up for new 2-year contracts.
