Opera Software didn’t even submit the Opera browser to iPhone AppStore?

Some additional controversy arose after the recent story on Apple supposedly rejecting the Opera browser from appearing in the iPhone AppStore was published.
Basically, originally The New York Times has published a news story quoting Opera Software’s Jon Stephenson von Tetzchner, who apparently said that Apple did not accept the Opera browser, which is supposedly completely ready to go, to appear in the AppStore.
Now John Gruber from the Daring Fireball has done some digging on this story… and came up with some rather interesting revelations: according to sources who are familiar with the situation (and obviously would like to remain anonymous), while Opera Software has indeed made an iPhone version of Opera Mini, the app was never even submitted to the AppStore.

According to Mr Gruber this might be due to the fact that Opera Mini requires at least some Java interpreter functionality, while the guidelines for Apple developers specifically don’t allow any third party frameworks or APIs to be used while developing AppStore programs. It remains to be seen whether this assumption is true. We’ll keep you posted on this bizzare story.
