German subway system operator demands Berlin iPhone subway maps app creator to remove detailed maps
November 2, 2008 by James
So here’s how the story goes: a 21 year old German programmer wrote a native app for the iPhone caled Fahr-Info Berlin (Berlin Trip Planner), which using the iPhone’s GPS and a map of Berlin’s subway shows the closest subway station. Sounds pretty neat, doesn’t it?
But that’s not what BVG, the agency responsible for operating Berlin’s subway system thought. In fact, they’ve forced Apple to temporarily remove the program from the AppStore.
Why exactly? According to a BVG spokesperson they’ve only wanted “the best for passengers”, and apparently being informed of the closest subway station doesn’t qualify as that. But the actual reason for this decision remains unknown — were they protecting their intellectual rights, trying to hide important plans from terrorists, or maybe just had a bad day? One can only guess.

This situation was eventually resolved, and at the moment it’s possible to download this program again. But BVG forced the app’s programmer to remove both the overview map and the detailed maps from the program, thus badly crippling it.
