Important note for users of iPhone firmware v2.2.1 and Yellowsn0w iPhone 3G unlock hack

January 31, 2009 by James

The iPhone Dev Team, creators of countless jailbreak and unlock programs for the iPhone, have announced that the recently released iPhone firmware v2.2.1 contains some code that hinders the operation of Yellowsn0w, their unlock program for the iPhone 3G.

Acccording to them: “Yellowsn0w will NOT work with the baseband version (02.30.03) that is present in the recent 2.2.1 update. If you want to use Yellownsn0w you will need to create and restore using a custom .ipsw that will allow you to update safely to 2.2.1 without applying the 02.30.03 baseband update. You’ll then have a 3G iPhone running 2.2.1 with an older baseband version that is still vulnerable to yellowsn0w, following these steps ensures that yellowsn0w will still operate.”

And if you want to grab an older version of iPhone firmware for this purpose, you can do so here.

When I activated my iPhone 3G, I responded to the prompt for newer firmware upgrade immediately without knowing the consequences. So I’m having v2.2.1 now.

My carrier is now willing to SIM unlock my phone free of charge.

Should I get the carrier to unlock before or after using Yellowsn0w, or it does not make any difference?

If I use Yellowsn0w to jailbreak after the phone has been unlocked by the carrier, it would leave the phone still unlocked, right?

If I use Yellowsn0w before the phone is unlocked by the carrier, would the carrier find any problem unlocking the phone? Would they know that I have tempered with the phone? Would their unlocking affect the jailbroken phone in any way?

Would be nice if anyone could help me with my question.

    Thank you in advance.
