Imagine going to a Las Vegas casino just to be expelled for using your iPhone. Or how about getting a jailterm and a hefty fine as well? If you think that’s unrealistic, you’re wrong.

Recently Nevada’s Gaming Control Board issued a warning about an iPhone app called “A Blackjack Card Counter” that can be used to count cards for you while you’re playing Blackjack, taking things a notch further than the “Card Counter” app that we recently covered.

According to the advisory: “The program calculates the “True Count” and does it significantly more accurately. The card counting program uses a choice of four (4) card counting strategies. For each strategy the user presses the button that contains the face cards as they are drawn from the deck. Depending on the strategy and on the value of the card the button will either add or subtract 1 or 2 from the “Running Count”. The program can utilize the following card counting methods including Hi-Low, Hi-Op I, Hi- Op II, and Omega II.

This program can be used in the “Stealth Mode”. When the program is used in the “Stealth Mode” the screen of the phone will remain shut off, and as long as the user knows where the keys are located the program can be run effortlessly without detection.

The advisory ends stating that “use of this type of program or possession of a device with this type of program on it (with the intent to use it), in a licensed gaming establishment, is a violation of NRS 465.075” (NRS 465.075 = Use of device for calculating probabilities – iPhoneWorld.ca).

So this indeed makes it rather plausible that you could get kicked out of a casino, get banned for life, or maybe get an oldschool “talking to” in some backroom that will end with a few bruises — in a good case scenario. In fact, according to the law, you can receive from 1 to 6 years in jail and/or a fine of up to $10,000 just by using this program in a casino.

If you want to test your luck in more ways than one, A Blackjack Card Counter is available via the AppStore for $4.99. A video demo is available on Youtube.

P.S. Just so you know, the process of card counting itself is fully legal by law — it’s just that using machines to do it for you is not.
