iPhone + jailbreak + Bluetooth Apple keyboard = serious goodness

It’s pretty amazing what can be done with a jailbreaked iPhone: like for example, connect a full-size wireless (Bluetooth) Apple keyboard to it, which certainly simplifies typing.

Researchers from ETH Zurich came up with a software solution that enables jailbreaked iPhones interact with Bluetooth-enabled devices, using iPhone’s existent (but not too functional) Bluetooth connection.

There’s no details on when this solution will be available to the public.

Here you can see a video of this setup in action, showing how the iPhone can be controlled by a remote keyboard.

More information is available here and here.

This would be even better if the on-screen keyboard could be eliminated. Sometimes it’s useful to be able to read something on a website and enter data at the same time (I think entering a captcha would be one of the best examples of this). With a bluetooth keyboard you don’t really need an on-screen one.

I think there’s a BT keyboard coming out this year that is iphone compatible sans jailbreak. If Apple are opening up the iPhone to be able to do this maybe we _will_ get an option where the onscreen keyboard disappears when a bluetooth one is detected….

One can only hope. While they’re at it they can give me CUT & PASTE goshdarnit!
