June 20, 2009 by dennis
Now that the firmware v3.0 is available, Apple updated its knowledge database regarding specific problems that might occur if you’re an iPhone / iPod Touch OS 3.0 user.
For your convenience, we’ve assembled the possible problems and solutions below.
iPhone and iPod touch: Syncing not enabled error message after restoring from a backup
![]()
Symptoms:
After restoring from a backup, you may see one or more of the following:
* You may see an error message indicating that sync is disabled when attempting to sync with your computer via USB.
* You may see that the sync options are not selected in iTunes.
Products Affected:
iPhone, iPod touch, iPhone 3G, iPhone 3G S, iTunes 8 for Windows, iTunes 8 for Mac, iPod touch (2nd generation)
Resolution:
This can occur because the backup contains settings for syncing with MobileMe or Microsoft Exchange over the air.
To resolve this, select your device in iTunes, click the Info tab, and select the options for syncing via USB.
Additional Information:
iPhone OS 3.0 and later supports syncing from more than one source at a time, however, the backup will contain only the over the air settings if more than one source is synced.
iPhone and iPod touch: Mail may unexpectedly quit if webmail account settings are synced
Symptoms:
One or more of the following may occur:
* Mail app unexpectedly quits when trying to access mail
or
* iPhone or iPod touch displays “Home” screen when trying to access mail
or
* Mail account on the iPhone or iPod touch shows blank account title/description in Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars screen as shown here:
Products Affected:
iPhone, Mac OS, iPod touch, iPhone 3G, iPhone 3G S, iPod touch (2nd generation)
Resolution:
This can happen if you have installed a third-party mail plug-in in Mac OS X that allows you to create or configure HTTP mail account(s) on your computer. You should not sync those mail settings using iTunes to your iPhone or iPod touch as the Mail app on your device does not support HTTP mail.
If the mail account has already been created on the device from your synced mail settings using iTunes, delete the mail account(s) from your device. You can identify the HTTP mail account(s) on your device by going to Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars and checking if there are blank/no title mail accounts listed (as shown above).
Check with your email provider to see if there is POP or iMAP access for the account. If there is a POP or IMAP option, re-create the account directly on the device using those settings. You could also remove the plug-in for Mac OS X Mail and configure Mail on your Mac to use the POP or IMAP settings.

iPhone and iPod touch: Internet Explorer 7 and 8 Favorites bar does not refresh to reflect changes after syncing bookmarks
Symptoms:
When syncing iPhone or iPod touch bookmarks between Safari and Internet Explorer in Microsoft Windows, the Favorites bar in Internet Explorer 7 and 8 may not refresh to reflect changes or updates to the bookmarks.
For example, if you sync Safari bookmarks to your device and then make changes to the bookmarks on the device (such as deleting some bookmarks, editing the web address, re-arranging the order of the bookmarks), when you then sync those bookmarks to Internet Explorer, the changes will not be reflected in the Favorites bar for Internet Explorer.
Products Affected:
iPhone, iPod touch, iPhone 3G, iPhone 3G S, iPod touch (2nd generation), Microsoft Windows XP, Microsoft Windows Vista
Resolution:
To refresh the Favorites bar, quit and reopen Internet Explorer.
Nike + iPod: Unpairing a sensor from a nikeplus.com account
Summary:
If your Nike + iPod Sensor runs out of batteries and you have purchased a new Nike + iPod Sensor, you may need to “unpair” your original sensor from your nikeplus.com account in order to continue uploading workout data from your new sensor to the same nikeplus.com account.
Products Affected:
iPod nano (2nd generation), iPod nano, Nike + iPod Sport Kit, iPod nano (3rd generation), iPhone 3G S, iPod nano (4th generation), iPod touch (2nd generation)
To unpair a sensor from your nikeplus.com account:
1. Make sure you are running the latest version of iTunes.
2. Connect your iPod nano, iPod touch (2nd generation), or iPhone 3G S to your computer.
3. Select your iPod or iPhone from the Devices list on the left side of the iTunes window.
4. Select the Nike + iPod tab.
5. Select the Sensor you wish to unpair.
6. Deselect the option to “Automatically send workout data to nikeplus.com”*
* Your Login ID should disappear when you deselect this option.
7. Click the Apply button on the bottom right corner to confirm.
By following the above steps, you will have effectively unpaired your sensor from your nikeplus.com account. The next time your iPod nano, iPod touch (2nd generation), or iPhone 3G S is connected to your computer with new workout data, iTunes will ask you if you would like to automatically submit your workout results to nikeplus.com. Once sent, you will need to visit your nikeplus.com account and sign in to have iTunes continue sending your workout results to your logged in account.

iPhone and iPod touch: Using peer-to-peer connectivity
Summary:

Products Affected:
iPhone, iPod touch, iPhone 3G, iPhone 3G S, iPod touch (2nd generation)
In order to use peer-to-peer connectivity, ensure your iPhone or iPod touch meets the following system requirements:
* iPhone or iPod touch using iPhone OS 3.0
* Application that offers peer-to-peer connectivity*
* Bluetooth or Internet connection**
* Applications are available through the App Store on the device or in iTunes. Refer to the application’s information page to determine if it offers peer-to-peer connectivity.
** Bluetooth peer-to-peer connectivity is not available on the original iPhone or iPod touch (1st generation). If you see the message “Not supported on this iPhone” or “Not supported on this iPod touch,” the device is not capable of using Bluetooth for peer-to-peer connectivity.
Use the following steps to create a peer-to-peer connection:
1. Open the application and select the appropriate option for a peer-to-peer connection. Options can include multiplayer, sharing, voice chat, etc.
2. If prompted, enable Bluetooth or select an Internet connection. Ensure each user selects the same connection type.
3. Choose an iPhone or iPod touch from the list of available devices.
4. Wait for the other device to accept your invitation to join.
Once the other device accepts your invitation, you can begin using the peer-to-peer features of the application. When using a Bluetooth connection, keep the devices within 25 – 30 feet of each other to avoid losing the connection.

Summary:
With iPhone OS 3.0 for your iPhone or iPod touch, you can now search information contained on your device and mail downloaded from your mail accounts and servers:
* IMAP mail server
* Exchange server
* Yahoo!
* Google
* AOL

Products Affected:
iPhone, iPod touch, iPhone 3G, iPhone 3G S, iPod touch (2nd generation)
While searching Mail, the To, From, and Subject fields of all your downloaded mail will be searched (it does not search the mail content or text body of the message). Depending on the mail server (IMAP, MobileMe, Exchange), certain fields may or may not be searchable. The maximum number of search results can vary and may be dependent on the query and the server’s search implementation. If you don’t find what you’re looking for, try typing more characters or words in the search field.

iPhone 3G S: Re-calibrate Compass
Symptoms:

iPhone 3G S periodically displays the message to re-calibrate Compass.
Products Affected:
iPhone 3G S
Resolution:
iPhone 3G S has a built-in digital compass that works just like a magnetic needle compass. The accuracy of digital compass headings can be affected by magnetic or other environmental interference, including interference caused by the close proximity of the magnets contained in the iPhone earbuds. The compass may need to be calibrated from time to time. iPhone 3G S alerts you whenever calibration is needed. To calibrate, hold iPhone 3G S in your hand and move the device in a figure 8 motion until the calibration screen disappears. The digital compass should only be used for basic navigation assistance and should not be solely relied on to determine precise locations, proximity, distance, or direction.
