hey ty, im having a problem with cydia. it wont download anything. it has an error messages when trying to install stuff

FYI. most cydia apps dont even work yet with 3.0. I personally dont think i will b jailbreaking anymore due to the fact that now that i have a 3G and 3GS, i use them interchangably. Syncing a jailbroken phone and a non jb phone is gonna cause problems in the backup procedure. From what i understand from having my 3g jailvroken for the marjority of the year i had it, i know restoring an un jailbroken phone from a jailbroken phone backup causes issues. Im sure all apps will be 3.0 compatable soon. But with the new firmware, its not worth the headache anymore. I will miss my irealsms though. I wish apple let you turn off the txt notifications and put an icon next to the batt meter like irealsms does. MAybe once the 3gs gets jailbroken, ill go back to jailbreaking. But until then, im running clean all the way now.

Your writer missed the point on this software. If you go to the Dev-Team site <http://blog.iphone-dev.org/post/126908912/redsn...> you will see that this software will jailbreak the 3G but will *not* unlock it. Better to wait for ultrasnow, which is promised soon…

I don't think I missed the point… As the article states (fourth paragraph):

“Please also note that if you’ve already used yellowsn0w to unlock the iPhone 3G this program will not work for you at this stage (full explanation on why it won’t work is below).”

.followed by original release notes that state:

“1. GOLDEN RULE: If you are using a 3G iPhone with yellowsn0w and rely on yellowsn0w to obtain cellular service, then you should NOT use redsn0w right now. Ultrasn0w (the 3G carrier unlock) is not included with this release and therefore your baseband will be locked and unable to use an operator other than the official one it was bought for. UltraSn0w will be released via APT (cydia and icy) soon. If you have an original iPhone (1st generation) then 3.0 carrier unlock works with this redsn0w release.
2. Yellowsn0w in its current form will NOT work with the baseband version that is present in the 3.0 update, you will need Ultrasn0w, which will be released sometime soon, Ultrasn0w will work with all iPhone 3G models (but not 3GS), even ones that were previously unlockable, Ultrasn0w (when available) will be released via APT (this means you will be able to get it via Cydia or Icy).”

So I think I gave the skinny on everything. Sorry if it was not clear enough.

I have the first generation iPhone and after I follow the instructions to hold down the power button and home button everything is good, but as soon as the next screen pops up, it's stuck on waiting to reboot. Any advice?

Sounds like you've bricked it. To unbrick:
D/l firmware 2.0.2
D/l and run ultrasnow RC3
Specify the 2.0.2 firmware (regardless of what version your actually running on the phone
Wait for the bootloader to be rewritten, then disconnect it at the white blank screen on the phone
Restore 2.2.1 in DFU mode

I am in the same boat except I have my IPSW file available. When selecting it Redsn0w is telling me my IPSW is unable to recognize. Any ideas on how to get around this one ? Cheers.

The IPSW file is the file that contains the firmware.

When redsn0w starts it asks you for your CURRENT firmware version.(the one that you use now).

Are you sure you got the right file? Different iPhone models (2G/3G/3GS) have completely different IPSW file, even though they're all v3.0. So maybe you just got the wrong one?

Apparently there's some folks that are having a problem with MMS… Maybe it's because you don't have MMS'es included in your plan?

As for caller ID problem, that's a new one for me…. Maybe iPhone Dev Team will release a newer version of redsn0w to solve it later.

I'm having similar problems here. Do you have to upgrade to 3.0 via Itunes before attaching the IPSW through Redsn0w ? I am getting unrecognized errors.

Hi John, that's correct, you need to upgrade first.

To quote the instructions: “To use redsn0w simply upgrade the device in iTunes to firmware
version 3.0 and run redsn0w to activate and jailbreak the device (and if you are using an original iPhone 2G, it will unlock it too!)”

So:
#1) You upgrade to v3.0 via iTunes.
#2) You download the firmware v3.0 for your particular iPhone model from here – http://www.iphoneworld.ca/news/2009/06/18/iphon...
#3) You run redsn0w and give it the IPSW v3.0 file that you've downloaded in step #2.

That should be all.

Either Icy OR Cydia.

At least if you're planning to unlock an iPhone 3G.

iPhone 2G doesn't need Cydia/Icy, it can be done by this app alone.

Upgrade as usual. Then run this app.

And make sure to read the comments, I've already explained the rest of the process there.

Yay! 2G iPhone seems to work just fine. Still unfamiliar with cydia. redsn0w actually crashed a few times while the phone was in DFU mode, but the update didn't hang. Can't seem to send pics by MMS…I'll mess with it over the next few days, figure it out again. Thanks!

Sorry. I didn't quite get one thing. I have the iPhone 2G. If I need to upgrade using iTunes as normal, then do I also need to download the ipsw file again separately for this to work? Any help would be appreciated

I did everything and was working until I backed up from an older file and now I don't have settings or anything, mail, and such and missing a whole bunch of stuff and even my apps are not showing after downloaded. any ideas?

Well my phone is working again. i restored in itunes, then redid redsn0w and it worked really quick. the key is to really press the bottons correctly and no slipups. thx.

So, I dowloaded the correct version of my CURRENT .ipsw files as per the site link in this discussion(that appears as a zip file in my Win Vista PC folder) and when I run redsn0w, both 7.0 and 7.2 and I browse for the IPSW file, namely [iphone1,2_3.0_7A341_Restore.ipsw, it never recognizes it as so that I may select it.

I have an iPhone 2nd generaton 3G…and the newest iTunes.

You can find them in our downloads section – http://www.iphoneworld.ca/downloads/ … select “Hacks – bootloaders” in the dropdown menu and you'll be given a chance to download them.

MMS will only work if you've got an MMS-enabled plan with your mobile service provider.

The easiest way to do it is to manually download the correct firmware v3.0 IPSW file for your model. Then in iTunes you hold the SHIFT button when you click on update. This will allow you to select the IPSW file from your computer directly instead of getting it from iTunes (so basically you won't have to download the file twice).

But yes, first you need to update, and then you require the IPSW file for the program to work (redsn0w will ask for it).

Well, if you backuped up from an older file v2.2, your settings are now incompatible with v3.0… hence the settings/programs have disappeared. I'm not sure if there's an easy solution for that, apart of going through the whole process again…

Hello I'm running an iphone 3g and have downloaded the correct ipsw ( iPhone1,2_3.0_7A341_Restore.ipsw.) I have downloaded it twice to make sure but redsn0w still doesn't recognize it? Any ideas? Maybe a different link? The file is also only 158mb where as the update thru itunes was about 230mb. Thanks for the help.

hi there. ive managed to successfully jailbreak and unlock my new iphone 3g i bought yesterday. i did everything correctly, followed all instructions to the letter, but i seem to have lost the ability to send pictures via mms even though i have an mms plan on orange. the phone seems to have forgotten i enabled it via o2 ( by changing the APN settings) when i activated the phone. any ideas how i can get it back?
also, Cydia doesnt want to load. it opens for a split second then closes and returns me to my home screen of the iphone

I have the same problem. But when I connect the phone to computer, iTunes says that it has detected a phone in a recovery mode and needs to restore before it can be used with iTunes. Please advise if I should follow that OR follow the procedure above to unbrick the phone. (I am not sure what is a bricked phone) Also, if you can give me a link to download ultrasnow RC3, I am just not able to find it on the net.

Retry the download… The link goes to Apple's servers and it's 100% the right file for iPhone 3G first version.

Also make sure you've upgraded your firmware to v3.0 first, before running redsn0w.

You might need to phone O2 and ask them which settings you need to enter to send MMS'es. Something might've got erased while upgrading.

Does Icy load for you?

That was another posted… Theoretically I know it can be done, but since I don't have an iPhone 3G I sadly can't give the instructions.

Thanks, I will try this as a last resort. But I am still stuck at the recovery mode and when I plug the phone to iTunes it asks me to restore, I have done that as well but still when I run redsn0w it get's stuck at the WAITING TO REBOOT screen. What else can I do to make it work on 3.0 ?

One interesting thing is that when I plug the phone to iTunes and restore it, it's shows my local carrier's name and I get messages from people which are flashed on the screen…so I am not sure what's happening here :-/

hello can you please help me with this. i download almost every possible firmware 3.0 but in zip file and when i unzip it it doesnt contain the ipsw program all i can see is DNG files. i used redsnow but it doesnt recognize anything because its not on ipsw file. And one thing i notice about the 3.0 version is that my battery easly drain and somotimes it doesnt want to charge and more on that it indicate on the battery meter that its full even if its not. what could be possible wrong with it? hope you can help me.

are you sure this is possible? since my Itunes wouldn't update [my connection disconnects alot I had to download the ipsw with torrent)
now i downloaded everything, redsn0w, the 3.0 ipsw for 2g, the bootloaders,

I used the same ipsw to upgrade (shift and upgrade), and it worked, now i get a phone on emergency calls only mode and itunes says sim not supported (i dunno if this is called locked or not activated or not jailbroken)

so I run redsn0w, recognizes my ipsw, does everything, i choose to install cydia but not icy (i dunno why i thought i'll only need cydia on 2g?)
i wait for 15 minutes with the downloading jailbreaking image, it says it's done on the computer screen, then the iphone restarts

and it comes back to recovery mode

i restored it with the same 3.0 ipsw so now it's back to emergency calls only

i wanna know what went wrong
i'll try using redsn0w for a second time, but it seemed to me that the update must be done from apple? or is there no difference between that and shift update and using the same ipsw that i'll use with redsn0w?

then iphone reboots and comes back to recovery mode.

Hey i have a 2g iphone with tmobile. my phone is currently locked and i downloaded redsn0w and the latest firmware v3.0. i also updated my phone to v3.0 from itunes. when i start up redsn0w and browse for the firmware v3.0, i open up the folder “iPhone1,1_3.0_7A341_Restore”. then i only have the option to open 2 folders. one is “Firmware” and the other is “.fseventsd”. when i open the “.fseventsd” folder nothing shows in the folder. when i ophen the “Firmware” folder i have 2 options “all_flash” and “dfu” both of these folders lead to nothing inside of them. i need help. i am with windows xp

After 1 month of trials and waiting for new releases, I tried everything possible to unlock my iphone even using turbo sims. Nothing worked except for this . redsn0w worked for me and i am using ulocked iphone finally.

okay so I have a windows computer, running XP i downloaded the firmware…and it is in a .zip file…i need to get it to change to ipsw…who do i do that? for the life of me, i've looked everywhere and all of the advice is for macs…

Hi there. Is there anyone who can help me with this problem? i am having an 3G iphone. It was open and jailbroken. All of a sudden it got stuck. I used itune 8.2 to restore it and after having done that, i get a msg saying i have to insert the original SIM Card. I just bought this iphone from Dubai and don't have any SIM Card originally supplied with it. Blackra1n is much easier to use, download that from blackweather.com (click the small windows button at bottom of page) then, once downloaded click 'make it ra1n' really easy, but on some it may be tethered (every time you reboot your ipod, youu will lose blackra1n and will have to download again.)
