iPhone Dev Team one step closer to iPhone 3GS unlock, Apple’s to thank

June 26, 2009 by dennis

Those unstoppable iPhone hackers from the iPhone Dev Team announced that they’re one step closer to producing an unlock tool for the recently launched iPhone 3GS.

Their statement says:

[Less than a week after the 3GS launch] we were able to verify that the 24Kpwn exploit that the hybrid team used on the iPod Touch 2G is still applicable to the bootrom of the iPhone 3GS. That means we can use the same sort of technique used by our current redsn0w tool to jailbreak and unlock the iPhone 3GS. ”

They further wonder:

This is great news, but how did it happen? Why didn’t Apple fix this in their normal cat&mouse fashion? Well it seems this bootrom was cut in about the August 2008 timeframe, so the unintended early reveal of 24Kpwn earlier this year didn’t affect the iPhone 3GS.”

Still, there’s a word of warning among all those encouraging news:

Important: Apple has not given up on the cat&mouse game, and in fact there are challenging aspects of the 3GS jailbreak that aren’t in the other devices. It’ll take some time to safely work these into our tools, but the fundamental weaknesses are there: The bootrom is exploitable via 24Kpwn, and the baseband is exploitable via ultrasn0w. (And just like with the 3G, ultrasn0w for 3GS requires that you not update your baseband when Apple comes out with new firmware.)

So for now the only models that can be unlocked are the iPhone 2G and the iPhone 3G.
- redsn0w: iPhone 2G unlock
- ultrasn0w: iPhone 3G unlock

will ver 3 upgrade prevent jailbreak/unlocking?

i know this will seem dim, bit part of the source of the confusion about candidates for unlocking comes from the lack of percision from the devteam themselves …

on the one hand the devteam is reported as warning users not to upgrade their firmware (specifically their baseband radio) as part of any routine OS upgrade or else that will (forever?) prevent an iphone(3G) from being able to be unlocked in the future! – ie one is left with the impression that only virgin phones may be unlocked!?

on the other hand, the devteam's triumphant announcements keep declaring that they have stayed one step ahead of apple (aka the 'cat and mouse game') – and specifically they have succeeded in providing unlocks for each progressive step in apple's firmware upgrade path!

so it is hard to make out what exactly one should take away from “And just like with the 3G, ultrasn0w for 3GS requires that you not update your baseband when Apple comes out with new firmware.)”

i am sure it is all much less convoluted than it seems ;-)

but it often seems quite byzantine for those of us who are too busy to follow all the twists & turns in this drama.

    illumination appreciated.
