Download: redsn0w v0.8 (Linux / Mac / Windows) firmware v3.0 iPhone 2G / 3G / 3GS, iTouch jailbreak / unlock tool

July 9, 2009 by dennis

The iPhone Dev Team have released a new version of their redsn0w jailbreak / unlock tool for the recently released Apple iPhone / iPod Touch firmware v3.0.

This new version 0.8 of redsn0w brings support for the iPhone 3GS as well as for Linux powered computers.

The latter means that now you can jailbreak / unlock your iPhone 3GS (of course all other previously supported devices are still supported) on either Linux, Mac or Windows.

redsn0w iphone 3gs jailbreak

Please read important release notes below before downloading and running this program.

Direct Downloads:
- redsn0w (Linux) v0.8
- redsn0w (Mac) v0.8
- redsn0w (Windows) v0.8

NOTE: you can download iPhone firmware v3.0 for your iPhone model here if you need it

NOTE #2: redsn0w itself cannot unlock your iPhone 3GS, but it can jailbreak it. Afterward you’ll need to install another program called ultrasn0w via Cydia (more info here) (included in redsn0w), which will unlock it for you.

NOTE #3: iPhone 3GS owners need to get personalized (signed) dfu/img3 files in order to ensure that future firmware upgrades will work.

IMPORTANT: OFFICIAL RELEASE NOTES FROM THE IPHONE DEV TEAM ARE BELOW

Last night we released updated versions of our redsn0w jailbreak and ultrasn0w carrier unlock. These versions are now compatible with the iPhone 3GS running at 3.0. Welcome aboard, 3GS owners! (The tools of course remain compatible with all of the other platforms too.) Also last night, saurik released 3GS-compatible versions of MobileSubstrate and WinterBoard, components that enable many different add-ons and themes.

We realize we upset some folks (e.g. existing 3GS owners) with our earlier announcement that we wanted to hold onto the 3GS iBoot-family hole until 3.1 was out. Our aim there was to get as many people as possible onboard (within reason of course) before revealing the hole, since Apple will fix it immediately. But all of that became moot when the purplera1n release was made, since it uses the same hole.

For those of you who already own 3GS phones, the outlook is bright. As long as you have your personalized (signed) dfu/img3 files, you’ll always be able to jailbreak (even if you slip up and install stock Apple firmware in the future). For those of you without 3GS phones, it’s a race against the clock to use this particular hole. There’s nothing we can do about that, but we will always be looking for new holes.

ultrasn0w unlockers — You all must remain particularly vigilant against upgrading your basebands, since doing so will kill the unlock (for most phones, there’s no going backwards in baseband version). Apple has gotten very serious with the latest baseband — they’ve removed 180 (!) commands in an effort to cut down their exposure to holes. So please always stay away from stock Apple IPSWs and instead use our tools as we release them. These tools let you update your firmware without updating your baseband.

Those installing ultrasn0w will probably also need to do a single run of Settings->General->Reset->Reset Network Settings. We’re testing various fixes for that particular glitch.

Once again, thanks to @Oranav for finding the new injection vector that allowed us to transform yellowsn0w for baseband 02.28 into ultrasn0w for baseband 04.26, and for not revealing it to Apple before it could be used where it would be most effective — firmware 3.0.

redsn0w platforms — This is the first redsn0w release that also supports linux! It’s the newest version of the bunch, so any feedback would be appreciated. But right now, redsn0w should work on OS X, Windows, and linux.

I tried to install redsn0w, but after doing the holding down of the power and home buttons it wouldn't reboot as it said it should. Now the phone won't turn on. I have tried to reinstall redsn0w but it just zooms through the part where I am supposed to hold the buttons. Advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

  • kexaxu

did you restore you phone befor use redsn0w ?, you need Itune 8.2 version to do with restore OS 3.0

Hi, i am very new to the iphone. [planning to get it this week]

And i am still quite unsure what the jailbreaking does and the link from wikipedia [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jailbreak_(Apple)] isn't of much help.

I've heard that cydia [which is jailbreaking right?] allows the download of apps that needs payment for free. [source from youtube]

So after jailbreaking i am allowed to have more options for the apps? [including those that needs to be paid]

Cos i don't really need to unlock my phone. I'll be getting from the service provider.

    Thanks all in advance. :)

  • karmdebi

it continues to stop at Waiting to reboot. I have an ipod touch 1st gen. I've tried redsn0w 7.2 and now 8 and it does the same. I'm restoring it again for the third time now.

Fantastic just jailbroken my ipod touch with ver 3.0 update from apple. well done guys

  • letigre

I'm a newbie as far as jailbreaking my iTouch 2G, does it matter if I use the automatic restore function from iTunes 8.2 instead of downloading the 3.0 Restore file and restoring it manually? (Aside from ISP speed of course).

  • http://www.wiglingtonandwenks.com/ free games for kids

Does this works on the ver 3.1 as well?

Can the jailbreak be un-done? In case anything happens i still can send to apple care?

  • iphonew

This *could* work on 3.1 (only for jailbreaking). Not guaranteed though, and most likely no than yes.

  • Josh

With the new “bug”, apple has put out a recent update for the 3.0 OS. I have a 3.0 iPhone that is using ultrasn0w and was jailbroken with redsn0w. Do i simply download the update from iTunes, then re-jailbreak with redsn0w? Does this redsn0w tool have Cydia when i install it on my iPhone, so i can get ultrasno0w. Thanks :D

  • nwinburn71

I'm trying to install redsn0w 0.8 and its asking me to select a IPSW for my current firmware but there are no options to select. I don't know where to browse. What am I doing wrong?

  • iphonew

Do i simply download the update from iTunes, then re-jailbreak with redsn0w
    - Yes

Does this redsn0w tool have Cydia when i install it on my iPhone, so i can get ultrasno0w
    - Yes

  • iphonew

Well, if it's asking you to select your firmware, you need to select it…. http://www.iphoneworld.ca/news/2009/08/01/downl... here you can download it.

  • rastaray

I updated my first generation iphone to the v3.0.1 firmware with itunes 8.2.1.6. I then downloaded redsn0w v0.8 and the v3.0 firmware from links on this site. I then ran redsn0w and pointed it to v3.0 when asked. Everything works perfectly and my iphone reports v3.0.1 (7A400) firmware.
    You Guys Rock, Thanks.

  • gumbee

There's a new mirror for the redsn0w 0.8 software that I found. http://yourfilebin.com/. Check it out.

  • RocketRay

Can't get the Linux version of redsn0w to run on Fedora 8. Experiencing dependency hell:

./redsn0w: /lib/libcrypto.so.0.9.8: no version information available (required by ./redsn0w)
./redsn0w: /usr/lib/libcurl.so.4: no version information available (required by ./redsn0w)

Anybody successfully jailbreak on Linux? What distro were you using?

  • fishkiss

I'm having the same problem. Cannot select a IPSW. I've already download the 3.01 firmware but it will not let me select it under browse!
    Please help!!

  • shyaam

My redsn0w .72 wont recognise iphone 3.1 software :( for 3G when jailbreaking. Any ideas on what version of redsn0w I should use?

  • ashhhh

i just updated the software on phone…when i run “redsn0w” it says “unable to recognize specified IPSW”

    please help!

  • mohamedharb

Hi My name is Mohamed. I need your help please. I have à iPhone 3gs i unlock and jailbraik it but nos when i switch off and Than on so it told me to put the cable and i must open it with blackra1n what i gone do

  • achafin

Ive tried this 3 times and failed each time. I have FW 3.1.2 to start with. After the final reboot, I check the firmware in settings and it's still 3.1.2. Also, Cydia never installs. What do you suggest?

  • iPhone-World

That's because this program is not meant for firmware v3.1.2.

Find blackra1n here and use it instead.

    http://www.iphoneworld.ca/iphone-hacking-guide/

  • achafin

I tried both and get same result.

I've read that I may need to downgrade firmware. I tried that too but
failed. I'm starting to think it's the baseband ver that prevents it.
    I have 4.05.

Bottom line is I can't get away from 3.1.2 FW. How?

  • iPhone-World

    Hey,I've got a question…

Did you purchase the iPhone with 3.1.2, or did you upgrade to it manually?

…I think this might have something to do you with your baseband, maybe check if you can downgrade it?

And hmmm…. if you try to use blackra1n on your device, what happens then? …normally you should find a “blackra1n” app on your iPhone once the process is done, and from there you could install Cydia….

  • achafin

Upgraded manually. Had it 2 years. I can reinstall older ver of iTunes
    to downgrade – I think.

I've avoided further upgrades to keep it open to jailbrk.

  • iPhone-World

Okay, and what happens after you use blackra1n on it? = http://www.iphoneworld.ca/news/2009/12/18/downl...

….reason I'm asking is since I also have a 3G iPhone with manually upgraded 3.1.2 and blackra1n worked without a problem here… after installation it made a new icon called “blackra1n” on my springboard through which I've downloaded blacksn0w and unlocked it for use with my provider.

  • iPhone-World

I mean, first I downloaded Cydia through blackra1n, then I downloaded blacksn0w and all was good (still is:)))

  • achafin

Same thing. As if it was never done.
But I have the 2G. What ver baseband do you have?

  • achafin

Not that it matters, but I'm useing the windows version.

  • achafin

I just read ur link. I may hav rub the older ver so I'll try this one
    and let u know.

  • achafin

    It worked this time!

Don't know why. The file is the same size as the other one I ran.

    Thanks for your help.

    Allan

  • iphonew

Hey, I think it was because you indeed had an older version…. And the one you got from http://www.iphoneworld.ca/news/2009/12/18/downl... was the RC3 (latest) revision, hence it worked:) Or… maybe it was a fluke that it didn't work before:)

Either way, congrats on solving the problem, glad to hear everything worked.

    Happy Holidays!

  • achafin

    Thanks for your help.

Any idea how I execute third party .jar files?

  • iphonew

Hmmm, sorry, no clue… Try asking in our forum's support section through ( http://forum.iphoneworld.ca/iphone-support-trou... ), I'm sure someone there will know the answer.

  • lmoaj2

i am installing redsn0w 0.7 and it has being processing for more that 15 minutes

  • lmoaj2

what is IPSW? it is saying it those not recognize the specified IPSW

  • lmoaj2

    so this is what happened
I unlocked and jailbreak my iphone 2g with blackra1n, i accidently delete the cydia and rock, and then it got locked again, i tried to blackra1n again, and is not work. the picture of the guy does not comes up on the phone and “its saying waiting to reboot” but nothing.

I tried to run redsn0w-linux_0.8 on Fedora 13 (latest updates).
It will not run because the binary is linked with older libs.
Where is the source code of redsn0w so I can compile it for F13?

I need help. I got a unlock iphone 3g from a friend, this probably has been through everything (It has been unlocked, connected to itunes, updated by itunes, blackra1n ran on it, and there’s no sim card.) and the problem is still there: ‘connect to itunes/ emergency call only.’ I am just trying to sell it at the pawn shop to get some extra cash and they need it up and running to determined the model. My goal is to get it back to it original factory settings, meaning having it re-locked. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to get it unstuck or re-locked?

  • Scotty204

I have a 3g and have done the Pwnage and it does not install cydia- I have gone through several times and selected it, and nothing. I have gone through the open openapmkt and tried to find one, and it keeps saying they are not compatible. I have tried the RedsnOw and it says unable to recognize firmware (that I was directed to download for the 4.2.1)
    HELP :(
