Some of you may have read my review of Feeds (here), an iPhone rss reader. I thought I had found the perfect app for my rss needs, but that was until I used RSS Flash G. RSS Flash G is purely for syncing to a Google Reader account, so if you don’t use Google Reader, this app is not for you and I would recommend Feeds instead.

On the first run of RSS Flash G you’re prompted to enter your Google username and password. After the initial setup, you are presented with a list of folders (if you have sorted your feeds into folders) or pressing the rss icon in the bottom right shows a list of your feeds. Once you have synced, all new items are stored on your iPhone, so if you lose your connection, you can still read new feeds.

The layout of RSS Flash G is fantastic for viewing news items, and I find it much nicer to use than Feeds, or even Google Readers iPhone webapp. There are four themes to choose from in the settings – two white and two black. You can input your Twitter and Delicious account credentials for easy upload of an item, as well as setting how many items to download on each sync.

When you have an item open, you can choose a number of options: Open in the built-in browser, open in Safari, email item, share item, post to Twitter, add to delicious and mark as unread. If you read my review of feeds, you might notice something is missing. No support for ReadItLater or Instapaper. This is something I use a lot to keep track of items I want to read when I have more time on my PC. I haven’t completely switched to RSS Flash G yet, but I am experimenting with using Google Readers ’star’ function to keep track of items, which is built in to RSS Flash G.

RSS Flash G has another very interesting feature called slideshow, which scrolls through all new items, showing each one for a set amount of time (changeable in the settings). This isn’t something I would use, but others may find it useful. I would like to see either ReadItLater or Instapaper support built in, but this is still an excellent rss reader. The price is a bit higher than other readers but if you read a lot of news via rss, then the price is justified.
